Neuware -Natural hazards events such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions involve activation of coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical processes in rocks. The present book assembles unpublished contributions to the 7th Euro-Conference on Rock Physics and Geomechanics, held in 2007 in Erice, Italy. It presents new laboratory data, theoretical and numerical rock physics models and field observations relevant to the study of natural hazards. In particular, several papers are devoted to rock failure and explore the relationship between the competing deformation micro-mechanisms. Several others investigate shear-induced anisotropy of mechanical and/or transport properties, both in large-scale geologic objects and in laboratory samples. The remaining papers treat various aspects of rock physics and their industrial applications such as geothermics and reservoir characterization.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 436 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The articles contained in this volume are related to presentations at the inter- tional ¿Conference on Optimal Control of Coupled Systems of Partial Di erential Equations¿, held at the ¿Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach¿ from March, 2 to 8, 2008. The contributions by internationally well-known scientists in the eld of Applied Mathematics cover various topics as controllability, feedba- control,optimalitysystems,model-reductiontechniques,analysisandoptimal c- trol of ow problems and uid-structure interactions, as well as problems of shape and topology optimization. The applications considered range from the optimi- tion and control of quantum mechanical systems, the optimal design of airfoils, optimal control of crystal growth, the optimization of shape and topology in en- neering to switching or hybrid systems. The applications are thus across all time and length scales, and range from smooth to non-smooth models. The eld of optimization and control of systems governed by partial d- ferential equations and variational inequalities is a very active area of research in Applied Mathematics and in particular in numerical analysis, scienti c c- puting and optimization with a growing impact on engineering applications. In return, the eld bene ts from fascinating and challenging applications in that new mathematical often multiscale-modeling and new numerical tools as well as novel optimization results and corresponding iterative strategies arerequired in order to handle these problems. In particular,it becomes amply clear that constraints have to be taken into account, both on the control- and design-variables as well as on the state variablesandthe domains oftheir governingmodels.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 356 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The common cold is unlike any other human disease because of two f- tors: firstly, it is arguably the most common human disease and, secondly, it is one of the most complex diseases because of the number of viruses that cause the familiar syndrome of sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and nasal congestion. These two factors have made a ¿cure¿ for the common cold one of the most difficult scientific and clinical endeavours (a topic often d- cussed in the popular media, where comparisons are made with the ease of putting a man on the moon). The present book brings together a wide range of experts from epidemiologists to virologists and pharmacologists to look at recent advances in our knowledge of the common cold. In some respects the book is unique, as it focuses on the common cold, a syndrome so familiar to the layperson but one that receives little attention from the scientist and clinician. The common cold can be viewed from many different aspects as illustrated in Figure 1. The core knowledge for understanding the common cold must first come from virology and this is discussed in several chapters of the book. There have been major advances in this field because of the use of new methods of detecting viruses such as polymerase chain reaction techniques that have greatly aided our understanding of the epidemiology of viruses associated with common cold.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 372 pp. Englisch.

At first glance, it might seem to indicate the relationship between what buildings look like and how they stand up. This is indeed one aspect of what we are concerned with here. But on a deeper level, the fundamental concept of structure is what connects architecture to mathematics. Both architecture and mathematics are highly structured formal systems expressed through a symbolic language. For architecture, the generating structure might be geometrical, musical, modular, or fractal. Once we understand the nature of the structure underlying the design, we are able to 'read' the meaning inherent in the architectural forms. The papers in this issue all explore themes of structure in different ways. 180 pp. Englisch.

Many Shirshov's students and students of his students had a successful research career in mathematics. AnatoliiShirshovwasbornonthe8thofAugustof1921inthevillageKolyvan near Novosibirsk. Before the II World War he started to study mathematics at Tomsk university but then went to the front to ght as a volunteer. In 1946 he continued his study at Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk) Pedagogical Institute and at the same time taught mathematics at a secondary school. In 1950 Shirshov was accepted as a graduate student at the Moscow State University under the supervision of A. G. Kurosh. In 1953 he has successfully defended his Candidate of Science thesis (analog of a Ph. D. ) 'Some problems in the theory of nonassociative rings and algebras' and joined the Department of Higher Algebra at the Moscow State University. In 1958 Shirshov was awarded the Doctor of Science degree for the thesis 'On some classes of rings that are nearly associative'. In 1960 Shirshov moved to Novosibirsk (at the invitations of S. L. Sobolev and A. I. Malcev) to become one of the founders of the new mathematical institute of the Academy of Sciences (now Sobolev Institute of Mathematics) and to help the formation of the new Novosibirsk State University. From 1960 to 1973 he was a deputy director of the Institute and till his last days he led the research in the theory of algebras at the Institute. 242 pp. Englisch.
