Most recently, Kohn published A Most Glorious Ride: The Diaries of Theodore Roosevelt, the first time these volumes have ever appeared in print. Kohn serves as dean of the College of Liberal Arts, with an appointment in the Department of History and Political Science. As dean, Kohn seeks to foster internationalization, faculty research, and interdisciplinarity. As a teacher and scholar, Kohn remains interested in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era in United States history, especially the conjunction of politics and culture. Theodore Roosevelt is best remembered as America's prototypical "cowboy" president-a Rough Rider who derived his political wisdom from a youth spent in the untamed American West. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Theodore Roosevelt is often remembered as a cowboy and a man of the West who began his path to the White House while herding cattle on his Dakota ranch. The problem with this assessment, according to historian Kohn, is that it was created by Roosevelt himself and obscures the central facts of his life. Kohn argues that Roosevelt really learned the ropes of politics and leadership back East: "New York City shaped Theodore Roosevelt, and Theodore Roosevelt helped to shape the city."
