The use of fur, feather and hair, put together on a hook in fly-dressing, or fly-tying as it is more commonly known, to create an illusion of real life, is useless unless the proportions of each is correct. A wing too long, a hackle too sparse, or a dubbing too loose are common beginner's faults, and all may make the finished fly useless as an imitation. These mistakes can be corrected with the proper instructional techniques, but good quality materials are needed also, and this is of supreme importance when tying all flies. In eight chapters the author sets out to give the correct procedures and techniques for all forms of trout and salmon flies. With a little practice and patience, anyone reading this book will be able to tie any type of fly from a herl body to a split wing, as the various stages of dressing trout and salmon patterns are described in detail and superbly illustrated with two hundred full colour photographs. The buying of materials, the use of bleach and dye in fly-dressing, and even building a worktop and storage bench are all included in the book, which gives as much detailed help to the fly tyer as it is possible to obtain.
