Pictorial Wrappers. Zustand: Very Good-Near Fine. First Printing. 1st pbk. Berkley G-146 [.35 cover price]. Vintage Paperback. Reading crease, spine edge lightly rubbed, a few creases. Francis Andrews is a reluctant smuggler living in the shadow of his brutish father's legacy. To exorcise the ghosts of the man he loathes, Andrews betrays his colleagues to authorities and takes flight across the downs. It's here that he stumbles upon the isolated cottage of a beguiling stranger named Elizabeth -- an empathetic young woman who is just as lonely, every bit the outsider as he, and reconciling a troubling past of her own. Andrews, a man on the run from those he exposed, believes he's found refuge and salvation. But when Elizabeth encourages him to return to the courts of Lewes and give evidence against his accomplices, the treacherous and deadly repercussions may be beyond their control. All Vintage Paperbacks come sealed in 2.5 mil plastic bag and taped closed with removable tape which will not tear the covers if it sticks to them when the book is removed. Vintage Paperback.

Mass market paperback. Zustand: Very good. Later printing. [12], 336 pages. Robert Brown Parker (September 17, 1932 - January 18, 2010) was an American writer of fiction, primarily of the mystery/detective genre. His most famous works were the 40 novels written about the fictional private detective Spenser. ABC television network developed the television series Spenser: For Hire based on the character in the mid-1980s; a series of TV movies based on the character was also produced. His works incorporate encyclopedic knowledge of the Boston metropolitan area. The Spenser novels have been cited by critics and best-selling authors such as Robert Crais, Harlan Coben, and Dennis Lehane as not only influencing their own work but reviving and changing the detective genre. Parker also wrote two other series based on an individual character: He wrote nine novels based on the fictional character Jesse Stone, a Los Angeles police officer who moves to a small New England town, and six novels based on the fictional character Sunny Randall, a female private investigator. Parker wrote four Westerns starring the duo Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch. When his closest ally, Hawk, is beaten and left for dead while protecting a bookie, Spenser embarks on an epic journey to rehabilitate his best pal, body and soul. But that means infiltrating a ruthless mob--and redefining his friendship with Hawk in the name of vengeance. Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold. This book contains a complicated plot, numerous tough guys, and plenty of tension.sincere, visceral entertainment that will more than satisfy the author's fans. When he's on his game--and he's on it here--Parker is capable of packing a Hemingway punch into a few brief words and the occasional grunt. The author is a master at witty, self-deprecating dialogue, and there is plenty of it in Cold Service. Derived from a Kirkus review: Eight years after Spenser was shot and left for dead, it's Hawk's turn to seek revenge on his would-be killers. The Ukrainian mob, branching out from Brooklyn to Beantown, wants to horn in on Luther Gillespie's racket, so the bookie hires Hawk as his bodyguard. Result: Gillespie dead, most of his family ditto, Hawk shot three times in the back. Naturally, this will not stand; as soon as Hawk's back in shape several months later, he's eager to go after the shooters. Identifying five Ukrainian suspects is a snap, but when the DA's office bobbles the case, Hawk and Spenser are left on their own, except for the sympathy of Susan, Spenser's favorite shrink; Cecile, Hawk's favorite thoracic surgeon; and the underhanded but heartfelt support of the Boston Police Department and the FBI. The shooters, it seems, are protected by Boots Podolak, the mayor and unofficial owner of Marshport, whose move into Boston is fully though unhappily supported by Massachusetts East mob kingpin Tony Marcus. Hawk's problem, then, is to eliminate the button men and provide a trust fund for the surviving Gillespie boy without ruffling too many feathers of the mob. This is sharp and compelling.

Mass market paperback. Zustand: Very good. Second printing [stated]. Second front cover. [10], 451, [3] pages. Map. Winner of the Gold Dagger for Best Crime Novel. Although this novel is based on historical fact, the story itself is fiction. Robert Wilson (born 1957) is a British crime writer currently resident in Portugal. He is the son of an RAF fighter pilot, and has a degree in English from Oxford. Wilson is the author of the Bruce Medway series, set in and around Benin, West Africa, and the Javier Falcà n series, set largely in Seville, Spain. He is also the author of the espionage novel The Company of Strangers and A Small Death In Lisbon, which consists of a historically split narrative, and won the CWA Gold Dagger in 1999. He was shortlisted for the same award again in 2003 for The Blind Man of Seville, the first in the Javier Falcà n series. The second novel in the series, The Silent and the Damned (titled: The Vanished Hands in the United States), won the 2006 Gumshoe Award for Best European Crime Novel, presented by Mystery Ink. 1941, a Berlin factory owner, forced into the SS, has arrived in Lisbon. His mission: infiltrate the bleak mountains of the north where an insidious battle rages over an element vital to Hitler's blitzkrieg. The first seed of greed and revenge has been planted. Late 1990s, Inspector Ze Coelho has been recruited to investigate the sex murder of a teenage girl in Lisbon. The inquiry will take Coelho back across a bloody swath of history to the scene of an older crime, buried among a fascist past--and to a motive buried even deeper. And once unearthed, past and the present will converge with chilling implication and unfathomable consequences. Derived from a Kirkus review: The murder of a teenaged minx opens up a mystery that reaches back to the darkest secrets of wartime in this double-decker winner of the British Crime Writers' 1999 Golden Dagger Award. Inspector Josà Alfonso Coelho wouldn't even have been assigned to the case if Catarina Oliveira's corpse hadn't been dumped on a beach so close to the home he shares with his own teenaged daughter, Olivia. But now Zà finds that the beach was only the last stop in a short, sad life full of dozens of sexual encounters with a long line of men include at least two members of the band she once performed with-both of whom finished with her only a few hours before her body was found. The case is certainly sordid, but Zà would be even more disturbed about it if he were privy to a parallel tale Wilson is unfolding in interleaved chapters: the saga of Klaus Felsen, the Swabian peasant who clawed his way up the ladder to manufacturing under Nazi patronage and whose 1941 assignment to take charge of a massive exchange of gold for thousands of tons of Portuguese wolfram entangles him with a dangerous crew of Party members and fellow-travelers. What could clandestine shipments of Nazi gold and materiel have to do with the sex killing of a promiscuous teen half a century later? Even readers initially skeptical of the hoary convention of juggling two time frames will be sucked in as eagerly as Felsen's other conspirators as the inexorable march of history pulls his two stories closer and closer together. It's an added bonus that shrewd, self-deprecating maverick Zà Coelho is a wonderfully engaging detective, and that Portugal-based novelist Wilson writes with an economy and perceptiveness that bring each sorry participant to both stories squirmingly alive.
