Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -In der «Holzkunde» wird der Gegenstand Holz als biologisches Objekt behan delt, selbst dann, wenn technische Zusammenhänge zu erläutern sind. Darin unterscheidet sich diese Buchreihe von einer rein technologischen Darstellung. Und so möchte ich zum Ausdruck bringen, wie das Harmonische der Naturge setze, dem vor allem anderen die übereinstimmung von Struktur und Funktion innewohnt, im hochspezialisierten Individuum Baum und dem der Technik zu gänglichen Rohstoff Holz Entstehung, Gestalt und Bau ebenso bestimmt wie die Verarbeitung und Verwertung. Die Technologie, die Lehre von der Ver arbeitung des Rohstoffes Holz, soll zurückgreifen auf die Biologie, auf die Lehre vom organischen Leben. Die Aufgabe, dieser retrospektiven Sinneshaltung am Beispiel des Gegenstandes Holz Raum zu geben, hat mich seit je ermutigt, mein Schaffen auf dieses eine Objekt zu richten im Bestreben, in der Synthese von erarbeiteten Einzelwertungen zu einem allgemeineren und weitergreifenden Erkenntnisgut zu gelangen. Diese Einsicht hilft mir auch, die Verantwortung zu tragen, die sich beim Schreiben unabwendbar einstellt. Die «Holzkunde» wendet sich in erster Linie an die Fachleute in der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft; sie ist Grundlage für die Vorlesungen in Holzkunde und Holz technologie, wie sie im forstwirtschaftlichen Studium an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule in Zürich vermittelt werden. Den Anstoss zur schrift lichen Fixierung haben die Studierenden der Abteilung für Forstwirtschaft ge geben; die «Holzkunde» möge auch ihnen einen Dienst erweisen. Die Mit-Teilungen der drei Bände wollen im Sinne Werner WEBERS (1972) auf genommen werden als «Teilen der Weg-Erfahrungen» und Ansatzstellen für neue Gespräche sein.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Seit dem Beginn der Arbeiten zur ersten Auflage dieses Wörterbuchs sind mehr als 25 Jahre vergangen. Mein damals gehegter Wunsch, daß mit diesem Werk der botanischen Forschung und Praxis ein zuverlässigeres Mittel zur schnellen Orientierung über Etymologie, Geschichte und Aussprache der botanischen Namen in die Hand gegeben werden könnte, ist über Erwarten in Erfüllung gegangen, wie die zahlreichen Zuschriften und Rezensionen gezeigt haben. Auf der anderen Seite sind aber im vergangenen Vierteljahrhundert gerade auf dem taxonomischen Gebiet Veränderungen in einer Größenordnung von mehreren Tausenden eingetreten, die allein schon deswegen eine Neubearbeitung dieses Buches erforderlich machten. Es genügt hierfür, die von mir damals benutzte 9. Aufl. des ZANDER von 1964 mit der aktuellen 14. Aufl. von 1993 zu vergleichen, die insgesamt 27 308 Namen, darunter aber 8209 Synonyme, umfaßt. Es war also zunächst angebracht, das taxonomische Material zu aktualisieren und die Synonyme bis auf wenige, in der Forschung noch diskutierte (z. B. Pritzelago = Hutchinsia) oder aus Gewohnheit beibehaltene Relikte (z. B. Ophrys fuciflora statt regelhaftem Ophrys holoserica) zu eliminieren. Zugleich habe ich die Mate rialgrundlage durch die massenhafte Neuaufnahme von Gattungen und Arten der Bakterien, Algen, Flechten, Moose und Farne, aber auch der Gymnospermen und Angiospermen, erheblich erweitert. Aus konventionellen Gründen sind auch die mykologischen Taxa weiterhin in diesem Buch vertreten, selbst wenn nach neueren Erkenntnissen die Pilze nicht mehr dem Pflanzenreich zugeordnet werden können. Auf dieser Grundlage bietet das Wörterbuch jetzt mehr als 35 000 Taxa, die einer etymo logischen Prüfung zu unterziehen waren.

There were two workshops, October 14-25 and November 18-29, with more than 60 participants giving 70 talks. The titles of all talks are given at the end of this volume. Here we included 22 papers prepared by the authors especially for this volume, while the material of the other talks are published elsewhere. The semester was sponsored by the Soviet Academy of Sciences and UN ESCO. Since the new building of the Euler Institute was not ready at that moment, the sessions were held in the old building of the Steklov Mathemati cal Institute in the very center of St. Petersburg. Members of the staff of the Euler Institute were doing their best to organize properly the normal processing of the conference-not a simple task at that time because of the complications in the political and economical life in Russia just between the coup d'etat in August and the dismantling of the Soviet Union in December. The papers are mostly devoted to the theory of Toeplitz and model operators. These subjects are considered here from various points of view. Several papers concern the relationships of Toeplitz operators to weighted polynomial approximation. Namely, two papers by B. Solomyak and A. Volberg intensively treat the problem of spectra! multiplicity f~r analytic Toeplitz operators (which are, in fact, multiplication operators) and my paper can serve as an introduction to the problem. This theme of multiplicities is continued in a paper by V. Vasyunin where the multiplicity of the spectrum is computed for Hilbert space contractions with finite defect indices. V. Peller's paper deals with a perturbation theory problem for Toeplitz operators. In a paper by D. Yakubovich a new similarity model for a class of Toeplitz operators is constructed. S. Treil' presents a survey of a part of spectral function theory for vector valued function (Szego-Kolmogorov extreme prob!ems for operator weights, bases of vector rational functions, estimations of Hilbert transform with respect to operator weights, the operator corona problem). As a concluding remark I dare only note that the whole collection convinces us once more without a doubt of the fruitfullness of the natural union of operator theory and complex analysis (if at all the union of these fields is at all different from their intersection). 421 pp. Englisch.

The organizing committee was composed of W.N. Everitt (Birm ingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec ( Coimbra) served cheerfully and efficiently as secretary of the meeting. The con ference was attended by 44 participants from 20 countries. Yet again the importance of inequalities in both pure and applied mathematics was made evident from the wide range of interests of the individual participants, and from the wealth of new results announced. New inequalities were presented in the usual spread of the subject areas now expected for these meetings: Classical and functional analysis, existence and boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations, with special contributions to computer science, quantum holography and error analysis. More strongly than ever, the role played by modern electronic computers was made clear in testing out and prohing into the validity and structure of certain inequalities. Here the computer acts not only for numerical calculations of great complexity, but also in symbolic manipulation of complex finite structures. Prob lems in inequalities which even a few years ago were intractable, now fall to solution or receive direct and positive guidance as a result of computer applications. It is therefore not surprising that research in bioelectrochemistry requires the use of a great many experimental methods.
