Moreover, these differential systems are symmetric with respect to the origin of coordinates. This class of systems driven by concrete applications is of interest in engineering, in particular in control theory and the design of electric circuits. By studying these particular differential systems we will introduce the basic tools of the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations, which allow us to describe the global dynamics of these systems including the infinity. The behavior of their solutions, their parametric stability or instability and their bifurcations are described. Neuware -Earlier efforts in the field of thermal analysis were concerned with the demonstration of the applicability of techniques to a broad spectrum of materials and to establish the relationship of such techniques with other more accepted methods. While such efforts will and should continue, the Third International Conference was unique in that the first standards were disclosed for differential thermal analysis. This was the culmination of the international, cooperative effort of the ICTA's Standardization Committee. The standards currently are available from the United State's National Bureau of Standards. Thus, thermal analysis can be considered to have attained its majority. Reali zation of full maturity can be expected in the near future. Inclusion of plenary lectures in these volumes represents a significant departure from previous Conferences. This change is the result of the ICTA's recognition of its educational responsibilities. The title 'Nonlinear methods in complex geometry' already indicates a combination of techniques from nonlinear partial differential equations and geometric concepts. In older geometric investigations, usually the local aspects attracted more attention than the global ones as differential geometry in its foundations provides approximations of local phenomena through infinitesimal or differential constructions. Here, all equations are linear. If one wants to consider global aspects, however, usually the presence of curvature Ieads to a nonlinearity in the equations. The simplest case is the one of geodesics which are described by a system of second ordernonlinear ODE; their linearizations are the Jacobi fields. More recently, nonlinear PDE played a more and more pro~inent röle in geometry. Let us Iist some of the most important ones: - harmonic maps between Riemannian and Kählerian manifolds - minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds - Monge-Ampere equations on Kähler manifolds - Yang-Mills equations in vector bundles over manifolds. While the solution of these equations usually is nontrivial, it can Iead to very signifi cant results in geometry, as solutions provide maps, submanifolds, metrics, or connections which are distinguished by geometric properties in a given context. These advances serve as the basis for a new generation of therapeutic agents which may potentially alter our approach to inflammatory processes and infectious diseases. Neuware -FOREWORD This book came about as a result of two events: an exhibition on the Solvay Physics Councils, held in Brussels in May 1995, and a conference on the same theme which took place at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) on May 1Oth 1995. A book was published in French in conjunction with the exhibition, and much of the present publication is taken from that book. In addition, we have included some of the papers presented at the conference, as we believe they add a further dimension to the history of the Councils. The French term, Conseil Solvay, is usually translated into English as Solvay Conference or Congress. We have elected to retain the particular connotations of the French word Conseil by translating it instead as Council. The Councils were, after all, no ordinary conferences. Only a limited number of participants was invited, hand picked by a scientific committee, who for five to six days took an active part in the sessions and the long discussions that followed. Each day, one or two physicists would present a paper on a subject that had been chosen by the committee to fit in with the overall theme of the Council.
