Grinding poverty is the Indian farmer's greatest enemy, and Hori fights it to the bitter end of his life. He sets up a theoretical model for the rank~size series of medieval cities in relation to their regions and economic bases and, in subsequent chapters, tests it against demographic data for the cities of England, Ireland, the Low Countries, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Egypt in the period A.D.1000 to 1348, and of India in the seventh century A.D. The concluding chapter emphasizes the importance of the regions as a basis for late medieval society and their destruction by the plague, leaving conditions favorable for the rise of absolute monarchies and nations. In the collection and classification of data, the whole armory of medieval evidence is employed. Basic figures are derived from such valuable lists as those of hearthtax payments, oathtakers, musters of soldiers, and rolls of burgesses to more elusive physical evidence such as the areas enclosed by city walls, or even the amount of grain laid up in anticipation of a siege. These are modified by a survey of such influences as climate and relief, commerce and agriculture, and by the study of patterns of migration, the mortality caused by outbreaks of the plague, and by noting regional habits, local dialects, customs, and physical types. This important work of interpretative scholarship helps to correct current views of the late Middle Ages. A valid medieval pattern of cities and people is delineated; functional regions are identified and a proper rank~size relationship is accorded to such various cities as Paris, Prague, Toledo, Cologne, Antioch, and Cairo. A picture emerges of a regionally oriented world with interrelationships of cities and regions of a more balanced structure than any since. The text is fully supported by tables and maps, and its provision of a quantitative framework for the study of medieval town life makes it indispensable for its period. As a scholarly work, the book should be of interest not only to demographers and historians, but also to geographers, economists, and urban theorists.
