Softcover. Zustand: Good. This useful book contains complete illustrated instructions on all of the basics of Beadwork and Leather crafts of the American Indian and the early frontier. It is the second in a series on Traditional Indian Crafts and was written in answer to numerous requests for a "how to do it" book that would not only cover the basics of the traditional crafts of the American Indian, but would also present illustrated step-by-step instructions on how to do those crafts. The book has two objectives: To provide a clear, concise guide to the person who simply wants to make a nice attractive pouch or bag and to serve as a "primer" on the basics of traditional beadwork and leathercrafts of Native Americans for the craftsperson who wants to understand the techniques involved and, thereby, be able to construct other items using them. Each project was written independent of all the others and will allow you to make any one item without reading the total book. Projects described include Leather Pouch, Strike-A-Lite Pouch, Knife Sheath, Beaded Sioux Pouch, Scissors Pouch, Beaded Crow Pouch, Fringed Pouch, Beaded Awl Case, Quilled Pipe Bag, Fringed Possibles Bag, Fringed Mirror Pouch, and Gage d'More Pouch. In addition, craft techniques described include all the basics of working with and sewing leather, beading techniques such as edging, the lazy stitch, running stitch, "crow" stitch, spot stitch (for making rosettes), and return stitch, and the preparation and use of porcupine quills for quill wrapping. All of the pouches, bags and containers described may also be made without adornment if the craftsperson so chooses. This book is designed so that even the beginning craftsman can create authentic Indian and frontier crafts with ease and learn the basic techniques while doing so! 137 illustrations; 15 B&W photographs, 4 pages in full color; index.

Softcover. Zustand: Good. Let the Master of Brick Stitch teach you an entirely new and easy way to make these very popular small beaded purses that are worn as necklaces. And as a bonus, learn an exciting new beading stitch called Freeform, which can be used to make all sorts of jewelry. New ways to use brick stitch, new designs, new techniques, and the same best-selling Deon quality that crafters have loved for more than ten years.Deon's new book is fully illustrated, with her characteristic easy-to-follow instructions and lots of photographs of the designs - both color and black & white. The patterns are clearly graphed by computer, making them easy to read and follow. Included are many ideas for trimming the edges of a purse, as well as a variety of necklace strap suggestions.Deon's Tubular Brick Stitch techniques are unique, allowing the beader to start every row at the edge of the chart. The starting point does not spiral around the beadwork as with many other purse techniques, making this method easier to use. The Tubular Brick Stitch instructions include sections on design charting, tubular foundation rows, and beading the body of a purse. Various trimmings for the top and bottom of a purse, plus beautiful necklace straps are explained and illustrated. Any of these trimmings can be added to any of the purses, as the photographs suggest. Instructions for the Freeform Stitch are given and example bracelets, necklaces and purse straps are described and pictured. This stitch is a special way to "cage" a stone, glass or driftwood piece, or any bauble as a pendant in a necklace, brooch, bracelet, bolo tie, earring or barrette.14 exciting and easy to follow Treasure Purse patterns are included: Hearts & Flowers; "Z" Purse; Frills; Fleur-de-Lis; Windmill; Hairy Elephante'; Ribbons; Wabunung; Stripes on the Diagonal; Deer To My Heart; Diamond Connection; Four-Twenty-One; Zig-Zags; and Kokopelli.Don't miss this opportunity to own a book that you are sure to use again and again. Softcover. Zustand: Good. A comprehensive study of the beadwork of the Crow Indian Nation from 1805 to contemporary times. Between 1907 and 1916 Dr. Robert H. Lowie made repeated visits to the Crow Agency Reservation to study their traditional customs and, as a result, published the first paper on Crow Indian beadwork. Based on this research, in 1918 William Wildschut began to collect specimens for the Heye Foundation. His work went far beyond merely collecting specimens. He asked questions from his Crow associates and in 1927 produced a manuscript for the Heye in which he concluded that "true Crow beadwork was not borrowed from the neighboring Western Sioux, nor from any other Tribe. It possessed a distinctive character of its own."In 1957, Dr. John C. Ewers, a truly enjoyable expert, made further inquiries and this book was produced providing an illustrated description and history of Crow Indian Beadwork from the time of its first mention by the fur trader, Francois Larouque, in 1805. Included are sections on Men's Dress Clothing (Shirts, Leggings, Feather Bonnets, Vests, Gauntlets, and Feather Fans); Women's Dress Clothing (Dresses, Leggings and Belts); Robes and Blankets; Moccasins; Riding Gear (Saddles, Head Ornaments, Horse Collars, Cruppers and Saddle Blankets); Containers (Saddle Bags, Quivers, Gun Cases, Sword and Lance Cases, Cradles, Belt Pouches, Ration Ticket Pouches, Mirror Pouches, and Pipe and Tobacco Pouches); Characteristics of Crow Indian Beadwork (Beadwork Techniques, Beadwork Designs, and Bead Colors); Symbolism in Crow Beadwork; History of Crow Beadwork and a bibliography.18 illustrations; 48 B&W photographs; 3 pages in full color.
