Author Ephraim Hatch approaches this study of Joseph Smith's portraits from an artistic, rather than a scientific, approach. He does, however, partly base his assessment of portraits using an objective method of comparing the size and realtionship of facial features. He also analyzes, for the first time, the facial features of Joseph's close relatives (mother, brothers, children) . Among these first Iron County settlers were experienced iron workers from the British Isles.
