Cloth, folio, 35 cm, vii pp, 80 plates (most in red and black). From the introduction - "This publication . approaches from an unprejudiced and artistic point of view all the questions concerning the form and use of type of every kind and variety. It excludes no kind of type, and recognises no laws except those of utility and good taste. In the sphere of letters and lettering, as in other lines, rapid development cannot be retarded when once it has begun. For this field is too closely, too intimately connected with the mechanization of production, with the swiftness of exchange and with the necessity of producing novelties, a demand due to the keenness of competition. The more important therefore is the quick eye and careful observation directed to the best examples of the past and present. " An ex-library copy with with a gilt number on the spine, label on front pastedown endpaper, faint stamp, datestamp and number on title-page, spine ends bumped and covers somewhat faded, one or two minor tears, contents otherwise Good.…
