In den WarenkorbQuarto, black cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 79 pp. Numerous illustrations. Near-Fine, with former-owner embossed stamp; in a Fair, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes chipping. From dust jacket: Some years ago, the Kissimmee JayCees ran a survey: "What do you like most about Kissimmee?" An overwhelming majority said: "It's friendly." Today many of us who live in Kissimmee, and Osceola County, feel that we have a superior quality of life. This pictorial history helps tell us why. First, there were the small farmers settling at Shingle Creek with their small groves and farms. Many of them became ranchers, using limitless open range. Then came Hamilton Disston with his state-mandated project to "drain South Florida" in return for four-million acres at 25c per acre. His canals opened up the 10,000 square miles between Kissimmee, Lake Okeechobee and Fort Myers. For 40 years, steamboats and river traffic were fed by commercial estalishments in Kissimmee and supplied by the main line of the railroad which reached here in 1882. When highways replaced riverboats, Kissimmee became a center fed by more federal highways than any other Florida city, with the exception of Jacksonville. Ranching, commerce, transportation, citrus, retirees and tourism brought in a flow of new people, new ideas and accustomed the community to welcoming them and working together for civic betterment. If you look closely at the Kissimmee of today, most will agree that it remains a friendly community, a place where it's easy to get acquainted. It's a town where there is a well-rounded life, with strong religious, cultural, civic and recreational programs and a fine educational system. Still Kissimmee remains diverse with its ranching, citrus, light industry, commerce, retirement, and the burgeoning tourism. In den WarenkorbFrom dust jacket: Florida is Picture Post Card Land today and has been since the earliest years of tourism. What better way to share the joys of sightseeing and new experiences for a traveler than to select and mail back scenery views to the folks back home? Post card manufacture began in the last quarter of the 19th Century, coinciding with the discovery of Florida as a tourist destination. Consequently, the way towns such as Jacksonville, Pensacola, Palatka, Tampa, Orlando and other resorts looked in those early days are well recorded on vintage post cards. In Wish You Were Here, Florida historian Hampton Dunn has put together a fabulous collection of early scenes from every one of the state's 67 counties. The small communities are not overlooked and he has come up with some fantastic views of places like Wauchula , and Lawtey and Enterprise, as well as the better known towns and cities. The author has spelled out details of what the views are about and through this technique has relayed considerable history of the Sunshine State. This fascinating book is a coffee table conversation piece and provides a Post Card Album for every household. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, U. S.
