Lead tablet (129 x 99 mm). Inscribed with 16 lines of Latin text in Roman capitalis on recto, verso blank. Stored in a custom-made cloth case. The prosperous freedwomen and freedmen of Roman Hispania's rich southernmost province are named in this remarkably finely preserved first-century BCE curse tablet. With Greek and Iberian names hinting at their servile origin, the persons listed are linked to the Vibii Pac(c)iaeci family, which had documented links to Marcus Licinius Crassus, the partner of Pompey and Julius Caesar in the First Triumvirate. The tablet serves as documentation of the social advancement available to freed slaves and their descendants in the growing economy of Roman Spain. - Over the sixteen preserved lines of text, numerous men and women are named, with indications of their relationships to one another. The word "liber(a)ta" or "liber(a)tus", referring to a person set free from enslavement, is applied six times (three times to men and three times to women). Roman Baetica was distinctive for an extensive and prosperous middle class composed heavily of freedmen. Greek names such as "Axia" and Iberian ones such as "Arco" further strengthen the connection to the milieu of formerly enslaved people. - Several persons bear the name of the gens Vibia, a Roman plebeian family with an attested branch in the province of Baetica: Plutarch records that during the First Civil War, Crassus fled to Spain from 87 to 84 BCE and stayed first in caves on the land of Vibius Paciacus, who on discovering him there kept the famous epicure richly supplied with food and slave-girls. - Tabellae defixionis or curse tablets were a widespread phenomenon in the Roman world, with names of the persons to be cursed written out on a thin sheet of lead, which was then folded, or often, as here, hammered through with a nail in a graphic assertion of violent intent. The tablets were then hidden, often in a spring or well, to ensure that their magic could continue to take effect. - In the judgment of Peter Weiß, Professor of Ancient History at the University of Kiel and former owner of this tablet, it is to be dated to the second half of the first century BCE, but before its final years. Thus, the date probably roughly coincides with the creation of Baetica as a Roman province in 27 BCE. - A remarkable document of the vibrant ascendant social milieu of formerly enslaved men and women in Roman Spain's rich southern province. - Loss to upper left corner and to right side of the tablet; a hole in lower centre from nailing. Surface somewhat bent and wavy, cracks to margins, with some discoloration, some corrosion to text, but overwhelmingly present and legible. Overall in good condition, with admirable legibility for a curse tablet of this age. - 1) First recorded with an art dealer in Ostia, Italy, after whom it entered the private market c. 1967. - 2) Prof. Peter Bernhard Weiß (1945-2025), German ancient historian and epigrapher, Professor of Ancient History at the University of Kiel 1987-2008, purchased before 1986. - 3) European private collection. - Published: P.
