Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A Wigan Childhood is a happy marriage of personal memoir and local history. With great warmth and wit, John Taylor paints a vivid picture of knee-high life in the 1950s, an era that many Wiganers will remember with clarity and fondness. Indeed, this book will be a sheer delight for anyone who recal…ls (or loves to read about) a time when Mondays meant the smell of boiling washing; when net curtains twitched in the hope of witnessing scandal; homemade brakeless go-karts terrorised old ladies; cinema lights shone on every corner; and the air was filled with the competing aromas of coal dust, meat and potato pies and Uncle Joe's mintballs. In a tremendously entertaining style, and with real honesty, the author tells not only of his own childhood but also reveals the stories - skeletons and all! - of generations of his family. The portrayals of austere aunts, black-clad grandmothers, naughty boys and a myriad of other characters will have readers nodding in recognition, and laughing out loud at some of their tales and exploits. And to set the whole lot in context, John has woven skillfully into the narrative the history of the town itself, right back to earliest times, making this book a truly rounded evocation of a much-loved Lancashire town, and a must for all who know it. 'A thoroughly engaging book to be read and treasured'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The core of this text tells the story of Manchester's emergence as the first great industrial city between 1780 and 1850, and its time until World War I as the Capital of Cotton. Alongside his history of Manchester's economy and politics, with its tale of factories, utilitarian entrepreneurs, Peter…loo and the emergence of a politicized working class, the author places a less familiar history of the people and their culture. The development of middle-class suburban havens like Didsbury and Rusholme, the cinemas and music halls, the libraries and newspapers, and the great Victorian buildings typified by Waterhouse's Town Hall all contribute to this complex portrait. The last third of the book tells the story of Manchester's 20th-century deindustrialization (mirroring Britain's retreat from commercial predominance) and the dynamic regeneration of the last few years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This unique book is a real treat of a tale, telling of life, work and general tomfoolery in the running of a small-scale holiday business in Blackpool during the forties and fifties. Ivy House Holiday Camp ran on a mixture of hard graft, innovation, optimism and old fashioned customer service, all…with the personal touch. They snooped on Butlin's at Skegness for ideas about chalet building and general layout, but their aim was always to offer a less frenetic, more easy going holiday. The entertainment was organised by Bertha's 'cheerful prankster' husband Fred, who used his considerable charm to build contacts with famous names such as Violet Carson and Mary Hopkin, as well as becoming involved with the Miss Blackpool contests. There were themed show nights, Hi-de-Hi!-style all-round performers and trips to Blackpool, the Winter Gardens and even, unusually for holiday camps at the time, the Lake District. Visitors came back year after year and new business came primarily from word-of-mouth advertising. Vividness and good humour permeate this invaluable record of the sort of enterprise about which historians and others would know very little were it not for reminiscences like Bertha's. "First-hand accounts of the pioneering days of the holiday camp movement in Britain are rare indeed, so it is a delight to have such vivid recollections from one of the founders." - Colin Ward, co-author of "Goodnight Campers! The History of the British Holiday Camp". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book covers more than 2,000 years of history. St Albans - or Verulamium - was one of the largest and most important towns in Roman Britain, and the site of Britain's first Christian martyrdom. After the fall of the Roman town, a small community of Christians remained, and out of the dark ages…emerged St Albans abbey, one of the most significant religious houses of medieval England. However, the history of later medieval St Albans was dominated by conflict between the abbey and the civic authorities. The monks repeatedly thwarted the ambitions of the townspeople, and it was only after the dissolution of the abbey that St Albans was able to secure self-government. This book traces the evolution of urban government in St Albans, and the people's experiences of the political upheavals that beset England in this period.Like many other towns, St Albans was touched by the wars of the Roses, the civil war, and many lesser conflicts. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the economic importance of St Albans as a 'thoroughfare town', on a main road north from London, grew. St Albans also became a centre of straw-plaiting, while at the other end of the social scale, the town was known as a centre of political bribery and corruption. In modern times St Albans has grown substantially, along with other towns in the commuter belt.Extended suburban housing development was made possible by the railway, which arrived in 1858, and the spread of car ownership. St Albans - which became a city in 1877 - has been described as 'a terribly smug place', but has much to recommend it, not least the long and varied history which has itself remained an important theme in the city's cultural life. The book deals with all aspects of the history of St Albans, but is particularly concerned with the economic and social life of the city. Two themes stand out: the constant economic, political and cultural pull of London, and the ways in which St Albans has promoted, and been influenced by, its own past. "St Albans: A History" is illustrated with more than 200 images, most in full colour. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. An up-to-date and in-depth historical study of the northern Roman frontier in Britain - why was the military conquest of Scotland never completed and what were the criteria governing Roman policy over the centuries? The idea of the Roman frontier immediately conjures up pictures of Hadrian's Wall w…ith its forts and other remains, and of the Antonine Wall in Scotland. These two structures, however, represent two elements in a story which took a great deal longer to evolve and which, if taken in isolation, tend to mask a clear appraisal of the way in which the frontier in Britain actually developed. What, after all, did the Romans want to achieve in Britain? Why did they not capitalise on Agricola's victory at Mons Graupius in AD83 to subdue the entire country once and for all? How did the idea for a physical barrier evolve? And why, after all the effort of building Hadrian's Wall, did the emperor Antoninus Pius embark upon fresh conquest in Scotland? This book is intended primarily as an historical treatment of the Roman military occupation in Britain up until the early third century AD, although it does also describe the later history of the frontier zone. It draws upon archaeological evidence, but is not intended as a guide to the remains of Hadrian's and Antonine's Walls. Rather, it aims to set these spectacular fortifications into the broader context of Roman military plans. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Sometimes getting lost on a walk is the best thing you can do. In this beautiful corner of the world there are hidden corners to explore, long forgotten paths to discover, and spectacular views where you can pause, catch your breath, and lose yourself in the landscape. Arnside, Silverdale and Leigh…ton Moss are often overlooked by people seeking high adventure in the neighbouring fells, but the walks in this book prove that the best views don't always come after the hardest climb - sometimes they come after a pleasant pub lunch or before a well-earned slice of cake. This collection of walks enables you to travel through time and uncover the hidden history of the area - a history that includes giant flying worms, fairy folklore and an American President. Each route is accompanied by stunning photographs and a lively commentary pointing out all the 'must see' spots plus a few local secrets. There's also an 'escape route' for most walks, for those who fancy something a bit shorter. Trails with Tales is the perfect book for anyone wanting to pull on their boots, explore the area and get up close to a little local history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The County of Lancashire - and the City of Lancaster in particular - have a richer archaeological heritage than is often appreciated. This was most dramatically demonstrated in November 2005 with the discovery of a massive stone bearing the image of a triumphant horseman and his fallen foe. Th…is was without doubt one of the most significant finds of recent years. But who was the horseman, could the many fragments ever be satisfactorily be reassembled, and what did this stunning object mean for our history? To hope to answer these questions, and to put this artefact where it might be enjoyed by Lancastrians and visitors alike, would take the co-operative efforts of numerous museums, four universities, and the enthusiastic support of local people. This richly illustrated volume represents a first attempt - by archaeologists, classical historians, conservators and curators - to tell the stone's story, and in doing so to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding Insus, son of Vodullus. In November 2005, a massive stone bearing the image of a triumphant horseman and his fallen foe was discovered in the County of Lancashire. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A magnificent, illustrated history and guide of Britain's longest and arguably most important canal. Mike Clarke lived on the canal for 5 years, and his knowledge and in-depth understanding of the subject have led him to produce a wonderful book. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is England's longest a…nd arguably most successful canal. Originally conceived as a way for Bradford merchants to reach the rapidly expanding port of Liverpool, it was begun in 1770 from both ends simultaneously, and was finally completed only in 1816. The canal runs through or near some of the most significant industrial towns of the North - Liverpool, Wigan, Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Bradford and Leeds - and for many years carried a large proportion of the goods that fuelled the industrial development of the entire region. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In recent years field sports - hunting, shooting and fishing - have become one of the most hotly contested of pastimes in Britain. Shooting, hunting and even angling are now regarded as morally dubious or abhorrent; indeed, hunting with hounds in its classic form and hare coursing have recently bee…n banned in Britain. Yet for an older generation hunting, whether foxes, hares or deer, or shooting pheasant, grouse or partridge, were quintessentially English activities which the rich exercised and to which the middle classes aspired. But if one separates moral and political emotion from historical reality, what do we actually know about the history of field sports? How did their practice evolve? What effect did their pursuit have on the countryside? Who were the people who committed so much time, money and enthusiasm to the pursuit of animals and birds? Surprisingly, perhaps, this book is the first attempt to offer a proper historical perspective on the subject of field sports in England. Ranging widely through a variety of distinct sports dedicated to the pursuit of all sorts of wildlife, from foxes, deer, hares and otters to game birds, wildfowl and salmon, it discusses the involvement and participation of royalty, industrial plutocrats, the middle classes and even the working classes in sports. In a series of readable and accessible essays, handsomely illustrated, the authors, each expert in their subject, make a case for the study of sports by historians, showing how their history impinges on the history of the countryside and environment, as well as on broader currents in the modern social history of England. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Every town and city has its story, but few have a history which belongs to the world. A process of phenomenal economic and industrial growth, which began just over two centuries ago, was to put this hitherto remote Lancashire town - 'the greatest mere village in England', as Defoe famously called i…t - on to the international map. By the 1840s, over half a century of revolutionary change had made Manchester into the 'shock city' of the industrial age. It was the shock of the new which assaulted the senses and stimulated the imaginations of contemporaries. Manchester attracted visitors from home and abroad seeking the sights and sounds of a new way of living. Some were appalled, others excited; still others saw in its newness a historical development of epoch-making proportions. It seemed as if all roads led to Manchester, arguably the world's first modern city. The core of this excellent book tells this story, a tale of factories, utilitarian entrepreneurs, Peterloo, and the emergence of a politicised working class, but also of the people and their culture, the development of middle-class suburbs such as Didsbury and Rusholme, the cinemas, music halls, libraries and newspapers. In this important overview of Manchester's history, Professor Kidd introduces many new interpretations, and challenges several myths about the city's industrial heritage. Accessibly written yet scholarly, Manchester is the perfect starting point for an exploration of this famous city as it goes from strength to strength into the twenty-first century. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is a unique book which for the first time offers walkers a guide to a superb 30-mile circuit of the whole of Lake Windermere, which can also be done in four or five easy stages. Keen (but not hardcore!) walker, Duncan Turner spends a great deal of time (he is retired) in Windermere, and looked… long and hard for a book laying out a complete route around the lake. Having failed to find one in the local shops, he decided to research and write one himself, something which he has enjoyed doing immensely. From the outset, he decided that all the proceeds would go to New Holehird, the Leonard Cheshire home for adults with physical disabilities, situated on the shores of the lake. This is typical of Duncan, who works very hard to raise money for a range of charities (including Children of Chenobyl, which benefited from the sale of a previous book, and for whom he plays host to two children in his home every summer). Beautifully produced with colour photographs, this handy, pocket-sized book is sure to be a hit with the millions of visitors to the town and lake of Windermere. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The thirty-three cases in this excellent book give a unique and fascinating insight into life in the Victorian period, in Liverpool and beyond. Although murder can never be condoned, it is clear from the accounts of the lives of the accused and their victims that the world they inhabited was a… harsh one, where people were pushed to the very end of their tethers on a daily basis. It seems little wonder sometimes that people snapped under the strain, and this is clearly what happened in some of the cases described here. Others, however, are much more brutal and premeditated and still have the ability to shock 150 years on. These people w…ere working class, living from week to week, most just managing to pay the rent. Unfortunately, some could not. This book describes one such street, home to a community of ordinary hardworking and poor families. Yes, there was hardship, as they struggled to get by on too little in postwar Britain. But they didnt give up, instead showing a remarkable resilience, an ability to bounce back in adversity, and often great humour:`Debt, Elsie? a woman proclaimed to her neighbour, as she pointed to her headscarf. `Were in debt up to ere, love. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This excellent little book is a wonderful introduction to the story of the trial of the witches of Pendle in 1612. In a very lively and readable style, Christine Goodier provides a who's who of the events, as well as an interesting angle on the trials themselves. She emphasises that the accuse…d were merely flesh and blood, not demons, arguing that they were poor, uneducated people who were at worst misguided. Her inevitable conclusion is that a terrible injustice was done 400 years ago when they were famously convicted of witchcraft and hanged. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Fran Randle, Bill Shankly, Violet Carson, Les Dawson, Gracie Fields, as well as tacklers, overlookers, weavers and other mill workers, were interviewed for this gem of a book. A tackler comes to Oldham, in the pouring rain, and knocks on a door. Landlady opens the door and says, `Yes?' `Can I stay…here for t'week?' `Aye,' says the landlady, `you can, but you'll get dam'd wet!' This is a classic example of a tackler's tale a story of gormlessness, delivered with a straight face. All of old Lancashire is covered, including Manchester and Liverpool, and former Daily Express columnist Geoffrey Mather reveals a great talent for amusing observation and wry comment. The result is an un-put-downable, rib-tickling collection of stories, recollections and commentary by the author on what it means to be a Lancastrian, then and now. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
