Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Liverpool Cathedral is one of the greatest and largest church buildings in the world. Visitors marvel both at the scale and beauty of the great interior, while the building's towering profile dominates the skyline for miles around. Liverpool Cathedral was conceived and built entirely during the twentieth century, and its whole story is therefore fully documented in thousands of letters, papers and photographs. The author has had unlimited access to the archives and he has woven the facts into a fascinating and lively narrative which really does bring the characters and events to life. This book in fact tells two stories. First, there is the story of the building itself - its architect and craftsmen who worked in stone, brick, wood and glass - and Peter Kennerley, the former Cathedral Education Officer, knows that story better than anyone. Second, there is also the broader story of the building of a Cathedral community in the heart of a great modern city. The text is complemented by a stunning array of rare and beautiful illustrations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Neville Cardus was born in Rusholme, Manchester in 1888. He was the first music critic to be knighted, the most evocative - and most often quoted - writer on cricket of all time, and one of the great English essayists of the 20th century. It is hard to believe that so majestic and cultured a writer left school at the age of 13. For more than half a century, he wrote about music and cricket for the Manchester Guardian. His first senior editor was the legendary C P Scott. His first literary editor - also mentor - was C E Montague, a distinguished writer and drama critic. Cardus wrote 21 books: 10 about cricket, eight about music, and three volumes of autobiography. Cardus was a friend of cricketers (Don Bradman and Keith Miller), writers (J M Barrie and J B Priestley), actresses (Flora Robson and Wendy Hillier), and musicians (Beecham, Barbirolli, Menuhin, Arrau, Schnabel, Ferrier and Lotte Lehmann). Although he spent the last years of his life in London, he retained his love of Lancashire. He was honoured by the Halle Orchestra, and served as president of Lancashire County Cricket Club. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Conditions for Far East Prisoners of War were truly hellish. Appalling diseases were rife, the stench indescribable. Food and equipment were minimal or non existent. Men died daily, many in agony from which there was no relief. And yet, in the midst of such horrors, the human spirit steadfastly refused to be broken. Captives helped each other, intense bonds were formed, selfless sacrifces made. Tools and medical equipment were fashioned from whatever could be found, anything that could make life more bearable. Resilience, resourcefulness, pride and camaraderie; these were the keys to survival. Freedom, for those who made it, meant many things: home, family, comfort, of course; but also adjustment, loss of friendships, and a difficult road to recovery that for some would be lifelong. Most refused to talk about their experiences, coping alone with the post traumatic stress and chronic health problems. It was these ongoing physical after effects of captivity that brought a group of men into contact with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.Beginning in 1946 and lasting right up to the present day, LSTM's involvement with the health (and latterly the history) of these veterans represents the longest collaborative partnership ever undertaken by the School. Out of this unique and enduring relationship came knowledge which has improved the diagnosis and treatment of some tropical infections, together with a greater understanding of the long-term psychological effects of Far East captivity. Using eyewitness accounts and the personal perspectives of this group of now elderly POWs as the backdrop, Captive Memories charts this fascinating history. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is a warm, entertaining and moving book which will do much to renew faith in farmers and farming, as well as in human nature generally. Hardships are not glossed over (bereavement, the anguish and slaughter during the Foot and Mouth epidemic, for example), but Jean writes just as eloquently of the joys as she does of the sorrows of life in the beautiful, remote spot they inhabit. No reader can fail to be full of admiration for the resolutely cheerful Browns, or to care deeply about them. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Rivers and streams occupy a fundamental place within the British landscape. They are central and focal features of the natural landscape, helping to shape the very landforms of the country, as well as providing a range of habitats for flora and fauna. Few places in Britain are far from running water, and human society interacts with rivers in a wide range of ways. Most towns and cities grew up on riverbanks, and rivers play a vital role in economic, social and cultural life. They have provided power for industry; water for industrial use and human consumption; rivers have often been used for communication and the transport of goods; and they are sites of leisure and recreation. Most people are attracted to water; and rivers have featured prominently in literature and art over the centuries. Rivers can also pose threats, from flooding or pollution, and therefore have to be managed and regulated. Whereas there are many books which deal with specific aspects of rivers, Rivers and the British Landscape provides the first fully integrated analysis of British rivers exploring the physical formation of rivers; the characteristics of environments; analysis of the social, economic and cultural uses and associations of rivers; and examination of the problems of river management. These themes are explored through historical and contemporary examples, with case studies drawn from all parts of Britain. The book is lavishly illustrated and includes an appendix of key facts about British rivers. Written by experts on each aspect of British rivers, Rivers and the British Landscape is aimed at anyone with a general interest in rivers and the British landscape. The authors aim to highlight the holistic nature of river environments, and to explore the ways in which physical, economic, cultural and management characteristics interact to create the distinctive personalities of British rivers. It is hoped that material in this volume may help you to view your local river in a new light. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The thirty-three cases in this excellent book give a unique and fascinating insight into life in the Victorian period, in Liverpool and beyond. Although murder can never be condoned, it is clear from the accounts of the lives of the accused and their victims that the world they inhabited was a harsh one, where people were pushed to the very end of their tethers on a daily basis. It seems little wonder sometimes that people snapped under the strain, and this is clearly what happened in some of the cases described here. Others, however, are much more brutal and premeditated and still have the ability to shock 150 years on. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Cheltenham is well known as the most complete Regency town in Britain. It boasts a wonderful ensemble of broad streets, handsome terraces and sweeping crescents, as well as a remarkable number of generously proportioned squares and gardens. Grand stuccoed houses of the period are adorned with fine wrought-iron balconies, and the town has an air of openness, lightness and genteel early nineteenth-century affluence. This period was certainly important in Cheltenham's development, a time when the town became firmly established as a fashionable place of residence for the better-off, all the more attractive for being less expensive than nearby Bath. Yet there is much more to Cheltenham than this. For hundreds of years it was a significant market town and trading centre for the surrounding agricultural area. This gave the town a major economic role within its region and also influenced its physical development over the centuries. Then in the eighteenth century Cheltenham's pleasant location began to entice a number of affluent people to settle here, even before Henry Skillicorne inaugurated the Cheltenham spa on his land. Cheltenham's waters were taken by many distinguished visitors including, most famously, King George III in the summer of 1788. Drinking the waters, it was hoped, might alleviate or cure the king's periodic bouts of 'madness'. The king spent several weeks in the town. He enjoyed his stay, and Cheltenham spa's fame was secured. The transformation was profound. Cheltenham's population increased tenfold in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the nature of the town changed radically, from market town to large, residential spa with a unique appeal. In the twentieth century, Cheltenham changed yet again, as the council successfully spearheaded a campaign to bring business and industry to the area. Several organisations established their headquarters here, while the establishment of GCHQ was of considerable significance. Tourism and leisure, too, are crucially important. In March each year almost 250,000 come to watch the races, while festivals and the town's other attractions draw in almost 2 million visitors each year. Cheltenham: A New History sets the town in its wider context. It describes the town's physical development, its changing social mix and character over the centuries. It is illustrated with over 280 photographs and maps, most in colour. It also covers the outlying areas of Charlton Kings, Leckhampton, Prestbury and Swindon. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Buch
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In recent years field sports - hunting, shooting and fishing - have become one of the most hotly contested of pastimes in Britain. Shooting, hunting and even angling are now regarded as morally dubious or abhorrent; indeed, hunting with hounds in its classic form and hare coursing have recently been banned in Britain. Yet for an older generation hunting, whether foxes, hares or deer, or shooting pheasant, grouse or partridge, were quintessentially English activities which the rich exercised and to which the middle classes aspired. But if one separates moral and political emotion from historical reality, what do we actually know about the history of field sports? How did their practice evolve? What effect did their pursuit have on the countryside? Who were the people who committed so much time, money and enthusiasm to the pursuit of animals and birds? Surprisingly, perhaps, this book is the first attempt to offer a proper historical perspective on the subject of field sports in England. Ranging widely through a variety of distinct sports dedicated to the pursuit of all sorts of wildlife, from foxes, deer, hares and otters to game birds, wildfowl and salmon, it discusses the involvement and participation of royalty, industrial plutocrats, the middle classes and even the working classes in sports. In a series of readable and accessible essays, handsomely illustrated, the authors, each expert in their subject, make a case for the study of sports by historians, showing how their history impinges on the history of the countryside and environment, as well as on broader currents in the modern social history of England. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

(Paperback, 2007 ). 2007 1st edition. 8vo paperback (241 x 168mm). Ppxv,320. B/w photographs & illustrations, bibliography. Fine unread copy. In recent years, field sports of all descriptions including even angling, have fallen foul of an energetically evangelised official ideology. Despite this, field sports remain an important part of the lives of a significant portion of the population. The author examines the place of field sports historically and socially, relying heavily on secondary sources. Somewhat implausibly, Hoyle maintains that this book is "surprisingly, perhaps, .the first attempt to offer a proper historical perspective on the subject of field sports in England." This probably hangs on the author's interpretation of the word "proper". An interesting read containing contributions from many authors, with much useful material and an extensive and useful bibliography. Chapters include: Field sports as history; Royalty and the diversity of field sports, c1840-1981; Sport and the survival of landed society in late victorian Suffolk; The shooting party - the associational cultures of rural and urban elites; Wildfowling, its evolution as a sporting activity; 'A delightful sport with peculiar claims' - the specificities of otter hunting, 1850-1939; Science, sport and the otter, 1945-1978; the development of salmon angling in the nineteenth century; Starting a hare - exploring the history of coursing since the mid-nineteenth century; Foxhunting and the Yeomanry - county identity and military culture; The fortunes of English foxhunting in the twentieth century - the case of the Oakley Hunt. Contributors include R.W. Hoyle, Nicholas Mansfield, Edward Bujak, Mark Rothery, John Martin, Daniel Allen, Charles Watkins, David Matless, Paul Merchant, Harvey Osborne, Ian Roberts. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The ancient Lancashire market town of Garstang has a rich and varied history. The earliest written record of the settlement is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is referred to as 'Cherestanc', and it has played host to vibrant markets since the 1300s. In the early twentieth century, photographers produced charming postcards of the area, which now provide an important record of a bygone era. Local author John Askew has selected the best postcards from his own collection, and accompanied them with substantial, informative captions. From sunny market days, to the tranquil Royal Oak Field, or a long-gone tree or thatched cottage, each image represents a unique moment in time, as readers are taken on a wonderful pictorial tour through Garstang's past. Starting at the railway station, the tour passes through Catterall, Bowgreave and Bonds before reaching Garstang, and continues along the River Wyre, finishing in Barnacre and Nether Wyresdale. There are many interesting accounts of long-ago incidents, such as the night in 1761 when Mr Styth's 'pretty house' burnt down, destroying the town's charter, and the disorderly bonfire nights when burning tar barrels were paraded through the streets. Together with an excellent introduction that tells the early history of Garstang, including accounts of the manor, market and fairs, this pictorial tour makes a unique, beautifully produced little book and will be fascinating reading for anybody interested in the history of the Garstang area. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
