Giorgio Vasari, Leonardo's first biographer, said that the artist used to sketch many designs for architecture. In fact, in the so-called letter of employment written to Ludovico il Moro in 1482, Leonardo presented him…self as a military engineer, able to satisfy the demands of the Duke of Milan in peace and in war, declaring that he can give perfect satisfaction and to the equal of any other in architecture and the composition of buildings public and private. And then he speaks of his ability in hydraulic engineering for conducting water from one level to another. Leonardo studied in depth several ancient texts but also the treatises of his own time: in particular the treatise of military and civil architecture by the Sienese engineer and architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, a text that contains projects for fortifications with bastions, able to offer resistance to the artillery fire. This could explain Leonardo's fascination with fortifications, his involvement in the project to realize the tiburio for the Milan cathedral. He made a great many architectural projects for gardens and elegant buildings, testing out innovative solutions, such as the internal stairs. This allows us to better understand his excellent competence in architecture and why he attempted to plan the ideal city, conceived as being organized on two different levels, one for pedestrians and the other suitable for vehicle transportation. La natura infatti poteva essere capita soltanto in un solo modo: osservandola. La pittura, definita nel Trattato "vera figliuola della natura", è per Leonardo un importante strumento di conoscenza proprio per la sua peculiarità di essere fondata sull'operazione sensibile del vedere. La Natura è copiosamente osservata, studiata e riprodotta in tutte le sue forme. Infatti non c'è un elemento grande e piccolo che non impegni Leonardo con la stessa intensità e che venga osservato, capito e disegnato: il mistero è ovunque in un ramo ricoperto di foglie, nello studio di accrescimento dei suoi frutti, in un sorriso femminile, nel volo di un uccello, nel corpo dell'uomo, nel palpito di un cuore, nel complicato intreccio dei capelli delle dame rinascimentali, nei tramonti, nella meravigliosa varietà dei fiori, negli animali che giocano tra loro e si azzuffano, segni del fluire ininterrotto del segreto della vita. Dipinti e disegni di Leonardo e della sua scuola provenienti da raccolte pubbliche e private, compreso la terza versione della Vergine delle Rocce e una Maddalena discinta di sbalorditiva bellezza e affascinante iconografia, nonché un apografo del Trattato della Pittura di Leonardo nella biblioteca di casa Leopardi a Recanati, sono pure presentati a piena documentazione della sua presenza nella Regione. Infine, una presenza eccezionale in questa mostra è il Codice sul volo degli uccelli compilato esattamente cinque secoli fa, nel 1505, e rapportato concettualmente al Santuario della Santa Casa di Loreto, dove si trova la Madonna protettrice degli aviatori. Le ricerche hanno fatto luce sulla figura di Giovanni Francesco de' Giudici, erudito locale che possiamo seguire sin dalla sua formazione presso padre Lagomarsini, gloria del convento dei gesuiti di Arezzo, per poi vederlo collaborare con Lorenzo Guazzasi e Giacinto Fossombroni alla ricerca di notizie sull'Arezzo antica e medioevale attraverso il riordino degli archivi cittadini. Tra le iniziative di questo gruppo di eruditi emerge la seconda edizione dei Ragionamenti di Giorgio Vasari e la pubblicazione di altre relazioni inedite riguardanti Arezzo. Il de' Giudici poi, questa volta con la collaborazione di Tommaso Gentili e del pittore Ignazio Hugford, intraprende una nuova edizione delle Vite vasariane, la quinta, iniziata a Livorno nel 1767 e terminata a Firenze nel 1772, tre anni dopo la sua morte. Il fulcro delle riflessioni emerse dal convegno sta nel riconoscimento del ruolo centrale rivestito nella storia della prospettiva dagli studi effettuati presso la corte rinascimentale dei Duchi di Urbino da personaggi quali Piero della Francesca, Bramante, Raffaello, Federigo Commandino e Guidobaldo del Monte. Dalla seconda metà del Quattrocento alla prima metà del Seicento, infatti, il ducato di Urbino fu sede di un vasto dibattito artistico, tecnico e scientifico, finalizzato a definire l'idea di prospettiva come sistema rigoroso di rappresentazione del reale fondato su basi matematiche, ed a chiarirne le possibili applicazioni in campo pittorico ed architettonico. Dopo gli studi empirici di Brunelleschi e Masaccio, nel 1435 Leon Battista Alberti (più volte ospite a Urbino del Duca Federico da Montefeltro) fornisce nel De Pictura una prima analisi sistematica dell'idea di prospettiva e del metodo prospettico lineare. Il merito di aver portato lo studio della prospettiva alla codificazione scientifica, tuttavia, spetta a Piero della Francesca. Nel suo De Prospectiva Pingendi del 1475 e dedicato al Duca Federico sono infatti esposti per la prima volta in modo matematicamente rigoroso i fondamenti geometrici della scienza prospettica. L'effettivo distacco tra lo studio della prospettiva finalizzata alla pittura ed all'architettura e la sua formalizzazione puramente matematica va attribuito invece all'urbinate Federigo Commandino ed al suo geniale allievo Guidobaldo del Monte. Quest'ultimo pubblicò a Pesaro nel 1600 i Perspectivae libri sex, trattato pressoché esauriente dell'intera disciplina, che avrebbe aperto la strada a settori della matematica moderna quali la geometria descrittiva e quella proiettiva, oltre che ad un vasto insieme di applicazioni in meccanica, architettura, scenografia teatrale e computer graphics. Partendo da questi accenni, gli interventi analizzano con completezza la storia e le applicazioni della prospettiva nell'arte, nell'architettura e nella scienza dal Rinascimento al Seicento inoltrato, e riflettono sul ruolo della matematica nello studio e negli sviluppi più recenti della disciplina.
