Paperback. Zustand: New. "A highly personal reflection on the practice, teaching, and very essence of architecture and design.""What is architecture?"" Many great architects, from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to Etienne-Louis Boullée, have grappled with this question. This book has emerged from a process of personal reflection of the author on the practice of architecture and is, in essence, a collection of thoughts on how to understand architecture and architectural design. It does not aim to provide an exhaustive or systematic treatment. These reflections-shaped through teaching-remain personal, even if they aspire to be shared by others. The crux of the argument made here is that the history of architecture should be recognised as the foundational matrix of architectural identity. Starting from this premise, the inquiry delves into the essence of architecture and design; it asks how this discipline can be taught and learned, what constitutes a theoretical text on design, and what defines architectural research. The book addresses those who, much like an architecture student, wish to ""understand better"".Vittorio Pizzigoni was born in Bergamo and graduated in architecture from the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (Iuav), where in 2007 he was awarded a PhD in History of architecture. In 2004 he co-founded the architectural practice baukuh, with which he has taken part in international exhibitions and realised significant works, including Casa della Memoria in Milan (2015) and the European Library of Information and Culture (BEIC) in Milan. He has authored over 150 publications and has taught at various institutions in Italy and abroad. Since 2012 he has been Assistant Professor of Architectural Design, and since 2019 Associate Professor, at the University of Genoa, Italy.".…

Paperback. Zustand: New. Voyages en Sardaigne is a collection of unconventional thematic guides on this island in the middle of the Mediterranean. They offer to the reader different ways of observation and restitution of its territory, always characterized by an uncertain temporality:the present and the past merge to build a unique landscape, far from the convulsive setting of the contemporaneity. The Sardinian context becomes a paradigm to go beyond the debate between the two opposite poles: novelty and tradition. To weave this portrait, photographs and texts take part in the production of an anthology capable of offering a multiplicity of possible represen- tations. Words and images form a linguistic whole in which the word and the gaze reveal the possible rela- tionships and directions to discover these places. Nelle miniere di Iglesias / Into the Mines of Iglesias is the first part of this exploration that focuses on soil, excavations, incisions, mutations, transpositions and silence of Sulcis-Iglesiente, a territory marked by an industrial history. A wandering through time and space of a region «built», transformed, crossed by different types of works, infrastructures, relationships between things. These signs, these scars, are today the distinc- tive features of an extraordinary mining landscape. A space to discover through visual and textual narration.…

The richness of cultural exchanges between Italy and Switzerland, especially in terms of architectural culture, is the framework within which this publication was conceived and structured. The editorial project retraces and expands some of the themes addressed during the first seven years of the Swiss Talks, born in 2017 as a cultural partnership between the Istituto Svizzero and the architecture magazine Casabella.Based in Rome, Milan and Palermo, Istituto Svizzero is an interdisciplinary platform bringing together artistic and scientific research and maintaining a residency program for emerging young artists and researchers. Paperback. Zustand: New. "Modernist architecture and the urban transformation of Maputo, Mozambique, between history and modernity. The modernist architecture of Maputo is the protagonist of this book: the ground floors of its buildings serve as a lens to explore the transformation of post-colonial cities, focusing on streets, public spaces and urban change. Giovanna Silva's photography captures the city's evolving landscape and social fabric, while interviews with Ana Tostões and Ana Raquel Machava provide insights into Maputo's architectural heritage and challenges. Architects Matteo Poli and Luca Astorri (AOUMM) discuss its possible futures and enduring legacies, examining globalisation, resilience and identity. The book highlights the dynamic interplay between history and modernity, offering a broader reflection on urban adaptation and transformation in post-colonial contexts; as well as the importance of preserving and studying these modernist structures to create a sustainable and inclusive future for Maputo.Giovanna Silva (born 1980 in Milan) is an Italian photographer, writer and publisher.
