The slip case is made of corrugated cardboard covered with brown paper and stapled. The paper is browned with a little loss to edge exposing the corrugated paper. It has a 'paste on' decorated label with the title and author. This book deals with a rediscovered branch of Japanese art which, in the straightforward beauty of its products is currently delighting the Western world. Although these folkcraft creations have their roots in the country's ancient and colourful art tradition, their unassuming grace make them unmistakably in harmony with modern functional design. Dr Munsterberg brings to his work the fruits of four years of study in Japan and a deep knowledge of Oriental culture, makes available for the first time in English a comprehensive guide and commentary on this significant branch of Japan's varied arts. The sparkling charm of a host of folk-craft creations - toys, pottery, baskets, lacquer ware, farmhouses, sculpture, to name but a few - is beautifully portrayed in a wealth of illustration and descriptive commentary, covering every important phase of folk art. Its early beginnings, its historical relationship to the culture of the ancient courts and cities, foreign influences, techniques of production, regional specialities and the spirit of folk art.
