Neuware - The absence of photographs of the Irish Famine has been attributed to the shortcomings of a medium then it its infancy, but it may also be due to certain limitations in the visible itself. Susan Sontag argued that images can evoke sentimental responses but cannot address wider political questions of obligation and justice. Luke Gibbons revisits representations of the Famine, particularly those in Ireland's Great Hunger Museum, to argue that images can not only give visual pleasure but demand ethical interventions on the part of spectators. This fusing of sympathy and affective response with the right of redress is conveyed by a 'judicious obscurity,' a determination not to show all, which places an obligation on the spectator to complete what is beyond representation, or what is left to the imagination.

Catherine Marshall challenges the coarsening of history by the construction of commemorative monuments that are thought to provide closure over the events they mark. In this pamphlet, she explores how imaginative artists help us to work into and through the past. Through the vitality of her artists, at home and abroad, Ireland and the diaspora have attempted to come to terms with some of the inherited legacies of the Great Hunger, the most devastating event in modern Irish history.--back cover.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The subject matter of real human suffering did not lend itself easily to art. Ireland's Great Hunger--the worst demographic catastrophe of the nineteenth century--coincided with the invention of new mass-market periodicals. This essay considers the aesthetic, historical, technical and contextual roles of British newspaper illustration in interpreting the story of the Famine. Hiamh O'Sullivan examines how academically trained artists who had little experience of looking at unfiltered or distanced atrocity, became pictorial journalists and found new ways to image a trauma of unprecedented scale and horror.--back cover.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book explores the ways that women combine motherhood with paid work in contemporary Ireland and the consequences for individual women, families, childminders and Irish society. This book demonstrates the difficulties women encounter when trying to satisfy working and mothering lives which are governed by quite different values. Drawing on focus groups and interviews with thirty women who combine motherhood with paid work in Ireland, this book reveals the difficulties, complexities and dilemmas women experience and reveals that there is a complex system of inequality which occurs when women combine motherhood with paid work. These inequalities occur at individual, discursive, social and structural levels and their combination makes it difficult for women to satisfy working and mothering lives. Contemporary society uses maternity to divide and conquer women, both in public and private spheres, and women's inequalities are maintained because the issue is privatised, women are silenced and ignored. This book looks at the gender system which creates this complex inequality and reveals that by privileging some women sometimes, enduring inequalities are created for all women.
