Chafik of the Baghdad Police Force was the creation of Charles B. Child (1903-1993), was the pseudonym of British author Claude Vernon Frost. Beginning in 1947, the Chafik stories were some of the most popular features in Collier s Magazine, and many were reprinted in the annual Best Detective Stories of the Year. The stories about Chafik, his wife Leila, and his adopted son Faisal whom he found on the streets of Baghdad are superlatively constructed exercises in detection, but they have a more subtle level. They are also explorations of a culture and a time and place. The stories begin when the British still influenced Iraqi politics, and continue through the period of the monarchy and the country s attempts to identify its place in the world. This hardcover is done in a very small print run. (appx 200 copies). 15 short stories. This is the third volume in the publisher's Lost Classics Series. At least 2 of the stories are Impossible Crime stories. Book.

The publisher states that "The first printing of each book will be small perhaps 400-500 copies, divided between clothbound copies in dustjacket, and trade softcover." Eleven stories with a checklist of Hildegarde Withers short stories. Hildegarde Withers, the creation of Stuart Palmer (1905-1968), is the original schoolmarm detective. After she first appeared in The Penguin Pool Murder in 1931, she was so popular that a series of movies starring Edna Mae Oliver and James Gleason followed, and Palmer wrote short stories about Miss Withers for Mystery, a slick-paper magazine sold only in Woolworth's stores between 1933 and 1935. These stories, filled with the sights and sounds of New York during the depression ? museums, flea-circuses, burlesque shows, Latin gigolos ? are genuine forgotten classics. The introduction is by Stuart Palmer's widow, Jennifer Venola. Book.

Low print run as the publisher states that "The first printing of each book will be small perhaps 400-500 copies, divided between clothbound copies in dustjacket, and trade softcover." LUoyd Biggle, Jr- (1923-2002) is famous as a science-fiction writer who not only .used genuine science but whose books emphasized human and cultural elements, induding art and music. (He earned a Ph.D. in Musicology.) His detective stories about Grandfather Rastin in the Midwestern town of "Borgville" show this emphasis on the human element, especially as it interacts with place. and time. Bill Rastin detects crimes in a nostalgic, Norman Rockwell world of cantankerous sheriffs, schoolmarms, and con-men from the Big City. Rastin discovers how a human finger found its way into a little girl's toybox. In another episode, he investigates a thief who stole a broach, a Bunsen Burner, a slide rule, and $68 in cash. And why does a visitor want to buy an apparently worthless violin--and its bow? The Grandfather Rastin Mysteries, the 23rd in Crippen & Landru's series of "Lost Crassics," collects 12 stories originally published between 1957 and 1972, and it also includes 2 previously unpublished Grandfather Rastin cases. The introduction is by Kenneth Biggle and Donna Biggle Emerson. The cover painting is by Native American artist Barbara Mitchell. Book.

Three of the stories were nominated for an EDGAR AWARD while another WON a SHAMUS AWARD. Eleven stories and includes a bibliography. "To say that Brendan DuBois writes Thrillers is equivalent to saying that Fabergé was pretty good at decorating eggs. Not exactly wrong but a vast understatement of their accomplishments. Brendan DuBois's stories are not only filled with conflict, tension, and mystery, but they also dig into the issues that dominate our times. Several of them, like the Edgar-nominated title story, are about people who served in the murky and amoral world of international intrigue and now want only tranquility in a New England town -- but their pasts come back. Others, like the Shamus-winning "The Road's End," combine detection with the tension of the hunt -- but who is the hunter and who the hunted? The stories are about revenge and betrayal, but above all they are about putting down roots and finding identity." -- dust jacket. Signed by Author. Book.

Low print run as the publisher states that "The first printing of each book will be small perhaps 400-500 copies, divided between clothbound copies in dustjacket, and trade softcover." In 1930, Anthony Berkeley Cox founded London's Detection Club. His novels and short stories are among the finest examples of the fair play, challange-to-the-reader tradition of the Golden Age. Berkeley punctiliously presented all the clues to the reader, but as Tony Medawar and Arthur Robinson point out in their introduction, he loved showing that clues could be interpreted in multiple ways and Sheringham is often wrong in his conclusions. The title story in "The Avenging Chance" has long been considered one of the five or six greatest formal detective stories. This book also collects seven additional Sheringham and Moresby, one of which ("The Mystery of Horne's Copse") is a recently discovered novelette. Also included are Berkeley's own tongue-in-cheek satire of the Sheringham stories and a complete checklist of the Sheringham novels and tales. Introduction by Medwar and Robinson. Book.
