Isabel McMeekin and Dorothy Park Clark wrote separately under their own names, and jointly using the pseudonym Clark McMeekin. They often featured Louisville and the Ohio River as settings for their novels. This book is about a circus troupe traveling on a riverboat from Pittsburgh to Louisville in the early part of the nineteenth century, and playing the river towns along the way. The central character is a balloonist, who has accidentally killed a spectator in a ballooning accident and is hiding out on the boat.

The writing team of Isabel McMeekin and Dorothy Park Clark often used Louisville as a setting for their novels. This novel is about the central character Mary Louise Nelson, who is not the type of girl that young men necessarily go after. But in 1940, she finds romance with the same soldier she had known casually at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville in 1918.
