Does the sight of a pipe band make your spine tingle in a way that other bands cannot? Then this book is for you! The author has crafted thirty tales around our best-known pipe tunes, introducing you to some fantas…tic historical figures and spectacular places. Not only does this book delve deeply into the origins and history behind the tunes, it outlines the basic musical rudiments of the compositions, exploring why they have so much appeal. There are surely few cultures on the globe that have such a powerful link between a musical instrument and its people. Music and song have always been vehicles for story telling and this book continues that tradition, using pipe tunes as the central theme. Illustrated card covers, New. Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Illustrated card covers, New. First edition, pp viii, 130, b&w photographs and colour maps to rear, index of place names. G.M. Fraser was best known as Head Librarian of the Aberdeen Public Library during the earlier part of the 20th century. He was also a noted local historian with a great… interest in both the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire areas, and produced many pamphlets and books on the North-east of Scotland. His largest and probably most significant work was the publication of The Old Deeside Road in 1921, in which he identified and recorded what remained of one of the region's oldest thoroughfares. Now, almost one hundred years later, the same task has been repeated and updated in this volume. It is both interesting and surprising how much of the old Deeside road still remains, despite the rapid rate of modern development around Aberdeen and the towns and villages of Deeside. The origins and history of the old road from Aberdeen to Braemar were recorded in Fraser's book, but this contemporary appraisal of what is left on the ground takes into account the more recent developments and changes. Most of the original photographs in Fraser's book have a modern equivalent for comparative purposes, but there are also many additional photographs in this volume thay help identify and illustrate those parts of the road that still survive. It is hoped that those who have an interest in the local history of the Deeside area will find this book both a useful addition to their collection and also a practical source of information on the ground. The Old Deeside Road Revisited is the seventh volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. New Edition. New cloth-covered paperback book in mint condition. New edition published by Deeside Books, pp 12, xii, 84, map to rear, index. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is one of the earliest and scarcest of Alex Inkson McConnochie's publications and its printing in 1885 makes it a forerunner of t…he guide books used by today's hillwalkers. This book outlines the different routes across the Cairngorms along with the best ways of obtaining access, as well as the author providing vivid descriptions of the local scenery. The sport of hillwalking was still in its infancy in the latter part of the 19th century but was becoming ever more popular through the ease of travel brought about by the coming of the railways to the highland parts of Scotland. Further publicity to the area was also given by Queen Victoria's extensive travels on both Deeside and Speyside, which were then later published in Leaves from a Highland Journal. This book has been reproduced in its original form and also includes a copy of the original fold-out map as per the first printing. However, this small scale map does have limitations, and a summary of the modern Ordnance Survey maps that cover the various parts of the Cairngorms has also been included. A new introduction has been added which contains both a brief biography of McConnochie and also a comparison of this book with some of his later publications. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is the sixth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The Mounth Passes is a continuation of the author's previous work, The Old Deeside Road Revisited, and both books outline the cultural and historical significance of the region's communication network. The old Deeside road's development was predominantly in an east-west direction, following… the course of the River Dee, and is associated with the development of the turnpike system. In contrast, the old Mounth passes predominantly follow a north-south direction, and developed primarily as walking routes over the higher ground. Cattle droving was one of the major uses for these north-south routes, and the author outlines the strategic importance of these passes and how relevant they were as trade links to central Scotland and beyond. However, with the development of the rail system, and then motorised transport, there was an inevitable decline in their economic usefulness. Nowadays the emphasis is on leisure activities, particularly as access routes to various Munros and Corbetts. The author describes his own experiences in using the individual passes as thoroughfares, and thereby crossing the Mounth from one side to the other as did the drovers in times past. These personal accounts, along with many descriptive historical references, make an informative and detailed narrative that should be popular with both the hill walking fraternity and also those with an interest in local history. The Mounth Passes is the eighth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series. Signed by Author(s).

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. New paperback, republished from the original edition of 1911. Pp xviii,164, with the original b&w photographs and illustrations. It has a new introduction by Bryn Wayte, of Deeside Books. G.M. Fraser's Aberdeen Street Names is the latest in a series of rare and out of print titles to be rep…ublished by Deeside Books of Ballater. The original first edition was printed in 1911 by William Smith & Sons of the Bon-Accord Press, Aberdeen, and was one several published by this author on the local area. George Milne Fraser (1862-1938) was born in the Parish of Methlick, Aberdeenshire and started his working life as a stone-cutter in one of the many local granite yards. An accident curtailed this form of employment, and in 1877 he joined the staff of the Aberdeen Free Press and gained a reputation for specialising in articles on local history. This in-depth knowledge of the local area was probably one of the main reasons why he was appointed City Librarian for Aberdeen in 1899, despite not having had a particularly academic background. This position he held for almost the next forty years, and was credited with numerous innovative developments in his field, particularly in the acquisition of many of the publications added to the Library's Local Collection. Many of this author's works are relatively scarce, and this one particularly so, hence the reason for including this book in the North-east Scotland Classics series. Many books have been published on the history of Aberdeen, but this is the only one to have concentrated on the origin of the names of many of the streets that still survive in the city today. Mention is made of the destruction of many of the older parts of Aberdeen, particularly in the 19th century, both for slum clearance and for street widening, but it is still remarkable how many of the older streets are still in existence. It is interesting to follow how the author reached his conclusions on the origins of some of the street names, and he was ideally suited to explore the research opportunities offered by his position as Librarian. This book has been reproduced in its original form, complete with all of the original illustrations. However, a new introduction has been added, which it is hoped will help the reader if more information is required, particularly where illustrative maps are concerned. The book is a large paperback and is now the fourth title in a North-east Scotland Classics series published by Deeside Books. Previous titles in this series are Lochnagar, by Alex Inkson McConnochie, first published in 1891, which describes the various ways of reaching the summit of the mountian along with many traditional tales about the folklore of the surrounding glens. The second title in the series is Loch Kinnord by the Rev. J.G. Michie of Dinnet published in 1910, and gives an overview of the history of the Deeside area and some of its colourful characters with particular reference to the Kinnord (nowadays Kinord) area. The third title is Donside, also by McConnochie, first published in 1900, which describes the history and topography of the River Don from its source in the hills behind Corgarff to where it meets the North Sea in Aberdeen.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. New paperback with card covers that have a cloth veneer in order to retain the original character of the book as much as possible. In mint condition. Republished from the original edition of 1902, with a new introduction by Bryn Wayte of Deeside Books. Pp 181, with original full page illust…rations and five maps, advertising and index. Number five in the North East Classics Series. Originally published in 1902, this scarce title by Alex Inkson McConnochie has been reproduced in its original form, including copies of all of the original illustrations and maps. It is the fifth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series and a new introduction has been added which it is hoped will help the reader elicit more information, particularly where more modern maps are concerned.McConnochie was a prominent local historian and hillwalker and the author of numerous books, articles and guides on both the Aberdeenshire and Cairngorm areas, and indeed, was one of the founder members of The Cairngorm Club. He was born at Rothes on Speyside in 1850 and in later life was an accountant and law stationer living in Aberdeen, so obviously the North-east of Scotland was his native land. The reasons for Speyside's popularity are probably then as now - its outstanding scenery coupled with numerous facilities for outdoor pursuits. The coming of the railways to the northern part of Scotland in the latter part of the 19th century opened up vast areas to the tourist and sportsman, and Speyside was a popular destination. The history and topography of the complete length of the valley of the Spey are covered in great detail, as are its tributary rivers, particularly the Fiddich and the Avon. McConnochie gives a vivid description of both the local habitat and also the legends of the area as well as contemporary descriptions of a way of life that has now largely disappeared.Shop shelf.
