As a souvenir of the 1896 Annual Lincoln Dinner, this first printing of a speech given on May 29, 1856 at the Republican State Convention of Illinois, on the subject of Free States and the evils of slavery. Enlivened by bracketed accounts of the audience reactions ("Sensation and applause," "Immense applause and a rush for the orator.") Very good in ivory cloth boards, stamped in gilt, with a red, white, and blue shield. 1/2 inch loss to foot of spine; light soil and toning, especially to spine. Internally fine, with portrait frontispiece. Attractive DeVinne printer's ornaments; title in red and black.

A Very Good copy with some rubbing and light wear at edges, previous owners bookplate tipped inside front cover, with offset shadow to front free endpaper and following blank page.
