White's play in this opening is often very thematic, thus an understanding of the typical positions is more i…mportant than concrete knowledge of variations. It is a sound and solid opening, yet gives good winning chances for White. In contrast, it can be hard for Black to win without taking considerable risks. If Black survives the middlegame, there is often an unpleasant endgame lying in wait. This opening has been played by many top players over the years (Lasker,Fischer, Timman, Shirov.). In recent times it has scored well for White in the hands of specialists such as Rozentalis and Glek. Yet unfortunately it was never reprinted and it soon became a scarce collector's item. The reason: one of its co-authors, the chess trainer Gerhard Schmidt, left for the West. Despite the book's excellent qualities, which were acclaimed in chess circles, from then on its success could only be an underground one. However, the subject of the book is timeless and transcends frontiers, and so at last we have a new edition, fully revised by the original authors themselves to include modern games by world-class players such as Garry Kasparov, Vishy Anand, Vladimir Kramnik and Judit Pólgar. The book explains, clearly, systematically and comprehensively, the strategy and tactics associated with the open file: how files are opened, blocked, occupied and exploited as roads along which to invade the enemy position. A brief introduction lays the theoretical foundations and is followed by carefully selected and organised material in the form of illustrative games, in all of which the open file is the dominant or deciding factor. In each game there is a pause at a key position where a clear verbal assessment is given; these assessments alone are of huge instructional value, since they do nothing less than teach the reader how strong chessplayers think: what to look for, how to assess, how to plan. He grew up in a family of designers, and studied art from early childhood. Ruth Rivera, daughter of artist and muralist Diego Rivera, and Maria L…uisa Mendoza encouraged him to attend the School of Painting and Sculpture of the National Fine Art Institute. The talents of Octavio Ocampo are not limited to painting and sculpture, but also extended to acting and dancing. At the Art Institute of San Francisco, he studied all these disciplines and pursued both a film and theatre career. In 1976, he began to devote himself solely to painting and sculpture. He now works primarily in the metamorphic style -- using a technique of superimposing and juxtaposing realistic and figurative details within the images that he creates. Ocampo is known for several works in his sometimes wryly sardonic, sometimes evocative paintings in which detailed images are intricately woven together to create larger images -- the optical illusions fading back and stepping forward as you study the pieces, notice the details, and finally recognise the large scale intention. This is what Octavio Ocampo terms his "metamorphic" style. The Visions Fine Art Gallery in Sedona, Arizona represents Octavio Ocampo in the United States. Several collections in Mexico contain his work, and individual works of his have been commissioned for former President Jimmy Carter, Jane Fonda, Cher and others.
