Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. In English with some Hebrew. Contains the Errata leaf. [16] 131 [1]; [8][18] 551 pages. 150 x 105 x 45 mm. Last two blank leaves at the end of book have very old notes in Latin in a very neat hand. Original front blank is detached and has an early owner's name, "H. Cantrell M.A. Coll: Eman: Canteb:" and some penciled notes. Contemporary leather binding with repaired spine and new end papers. The boards have the blind stamped initials I.W., of an early, possibly the first, owner. The first part is a grammar of Hebrew, the second part contains a Hebrew English dictionary. Bound rather tightly. Orme, in Bibliotheca Biblica (1824) remarks that he "seems to have been a very zealous rabbinical scholar"; the first edition of this work was published in 1653 with the title A Gate or Door to the Holy Tongue. He believed firmly that Hebrew could be learnt as easily as any foreign language, and, interestingly, that girls and ladies would have no problem with "this kinde of learning; of which I had often before in my own thoughts perswaded my self, in consideration of that readinesse of wit, and quicknesse of understanding and apprehension, so naturall to them." William Robertson (flourished 1650-80) was a Scottish Hebraist. He was educated at Edinburgh University, taught Hebrew in London from 1653-1680, then in 1680 was appointed lecturer in Hebrew at Cambridge University. A graduate of Edinburgh, he is identified by Edgar Cardew Marchant in the Dictionary of National Biography as probably the William Robertson who was laureated by Duncan Forester in April 1645. From 1653 to 1680 he lived in the City of London and taught Hebrew. In 1680 he was appointed university teacher of Hebrew at Cambridge at a salary of £20 a year.Robertson believed Hebrew could be learned by ordinary people with a minimum of linguistic background. In the Interregnum he was supported by patrons such as John Sadler, William Steele and Lady Katherine Ranelagh, and was able to publish freely. In theology he followed David Dickson and Robert Douglas. After 1660 he had little support, and lost much of his version of the Hebrew New Testament of Elias Hutter in the Great Fire of London. Apart from his Edinburgh University education, the details of his early life are obscure. He spent most of his active life (from 1653-1680) in London where he was employed as a teacher of Hebrew. In 1680 he was appointed lecturer in Hebrew at Cambridge University. His published works on language are mostly concerned with Hebrew, although he did produce a work on Latin which enjoyed a certain popularity in its day - Phraseologia Generalis. A rare survival from the personal library of the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher and economist Adam Smith (1723-1790). THE LIBRARY. Upon his death on 17th July 1790, Smith's library passed to his sole heir, David Douglas, Lord Reston (1769-1819). Reston lived until 1819, whereupon the library was divided between his two daughters Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Bannerman. The Bannerman portion was donated intact to New College, Edinburgh (now housed in the University of Edinburgh Library). By contrast, the Cunningham inheritance was dispersed over a period of some 50 years, beginning in 1878 when part of the collection was sold upon the death of Cunningham's husband. Further sales are recorded in the early 20th century, with a large contingent (some 141 items) bought by Professor Nitobe of Tokyo University in 1920 (and subsequently donated to the University). A retained portion of the collection was donated by Cunningham's son Professor R.O. Cunningham to Queen's College, Belfast on his death in 1918. With regards to the size of Smith's library, 'MacCulloch, who saw the books before the dispersion, reckons their number at 5000. Dugald Stewart says Adam Smith possessed "a small but excellent library, which he had gradually formed with great judgement in the selection". The whole collection was more probably 3000 than 5000' (Bonar). The most thorough catalogue of Smith's library to date (see Hiroshi Mizuta, Adam Smith's Library (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 2000)) records 1808 individual works. Book's from Smith's library can now be found in institutional holdings at Edinburgh University (898 titles), Tokyo University (148 titles), Queen's College, Belfast (110 titles), Glasgow University (68 titles), New York Public Library (5 titles), Nihon University Law Library (4 titles), Keio University (2 titles), Kyoto University Library (1 title), and Reading University Library (5 titles). THE BOOK. The first edition of David Hume of Godscroft's History of the Houses of Douglas and Angus. Smith was related to the Douglas family through his mother Margaret (nà e Douglas), a granddaughter of the prominent fife landowner and member of parliament, Sir William Douglas of Kirkness, a descendant of the Earls of Morton. The library would eventually be inherited by Smith's young cousin David Douglas, Lord Reston. Hume's History is listed in the original 1781 manuscript catalogue of the library at Panmure House, where it is to be found 'Lying on the Top' of the 'Books in the Locked Press'. It is further recorded in James Bonar's A Catalogue of the Library of Adam Smith, p.52, (London, Macmillan and Co., 1894), and by Professor Hiroshi Mizuta in his up-to-date catalogue, which lists this work (item 832) as one of the known-unknown 'unlocated' books. ANNOTATIONS & MARGINALIA. An old printed auction lot description tipped-in to the front pastedown makes reference to a manuscript list of page numbers located on the front pastedown of the book. These correspond to distinctive horizontal ampersand-form annotations scattered throughout the second part of the work where the family name 'Hume' occurs. The note speculates that this could relate to Smith's intimacy with the philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), however, in our opinion these annotations likely pre-date Adam Smith's ownership of the work. By contrast, a single, unique one-word marginal annotation 'Apolug' in a later hand appears on p.265 in a passage quoting the speech made by Smith's ancestor Sir George Douglas (d.1552) promoting the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots and Prince Edward of England in which he '"told them of the apologue of the ass"' (p.265). Given the context of this passage and its relevance to Smith's family history, as well as the hand's outward similarity to marginal annotations found in Smith's copy of Locke's Two Treatises (held by Kirkcaldy Museum), which have been attributed to Adam Smith himself (see C. Smith, Adam Smith's library: recent work on his books and marginalia', The Adam Smith Review, vol. 11, 2018), this annotation is worthy of further study and research. A further inscription is found on the fore-edge margin of pp.102, 106, 298 and 396 relating to a previous owner: 'George Dickson His Book the Year of God 1747'. First edition, from the library of Adam Smith; folio (26 x 18.5 cm); MS page notes in pen, bookplate, and tipped-in auction lot description to front pastedown, loose MS pen note, pencil ownership inscription to front free endpaper recto, distinctive horizontal ampersand-form pen marginalia corresponding to page numbers noted on front pastedown, dated ownership inscription for 'George Dickson' to fore-edge of the verso of ff P1, P3, 2Q4 and 3F1 (partially obscured on all ff but P3), early pen annotations to 2D6 recto, later pen annotation in different hand to 2M4 recto, lacking front blank f. and final 2ff of text, title soiled with closed tears and lower portion repaired, first few ff torn at lower corner with slight loss to text, intermittent dampstaining; contemporary half glazed marbled paper, vellum corners coloured to match, rebacked, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine, joints expertly restored; [16], 211, [3], 205-436pp. Provenance: George Dickson (ownership inscriptions); Adam Smith (bookplate). ESTC R398; Bonar p.52; Mizuta 831 ('unlocated').…

"THE HISTORY OF THIS PRINTER IS INVOLVED IN MUCH OBSCURITY" (PLOMER). [INTERREGNUM PRINTING] . 8vo. [14.5 x 9 cm]. (20), 234 pp, (2), plus engraved frontispiece, and including letterpress title and terminal blank Q6. Bound in modern speckled calf. A neat, clean copy; margins of frontispiece slightly toned on verso only. Scarce second London edition (first, 1638) of this extravagant example of a cento or 'patchwork poem', composed entirely of lines from the works of Virgil. As often, the format was adapted to narrate a Christian theme using the words of profane Classical authors, and here the Aberdonian Ross (1590-1654) presents the events of the Bible from the death of Abel up the Passion and Ascension of Christ. What is curious about the present edition is its publishing history. Alexander Ross himself was chaplain to Charles I, and specifically composed the present work as a didactic text for the 8-year old Charles II. Although the collation of the prelims appears similar, upon inspection of the letterpress and printer's ornaments it becomes clear that Evan Tyler had entirely re-composed the type some 20 years after its initial appearance not an insignificant undertaking for a poem of ca. 11,000 lines plus complex printed marginalia. The fact that the work was re-published at all during the interregnum, and that it specifically still bears the dedication leaf to the young Prince Charles II (A2), gives us some evidence of the curious limbo in which printers may have been allowed to operate during the tumultuous inter-interregnum between the removal of Lord Protector Richard Cromwell in May of 1659 and the restoration of Charles II in May of 1660. During this period, although the country still nominally remained an absolutist Republic, the chief royalist was George Monck, commander of the English forces in Scotland. By December of 1659, with the nation appearing to descend into anarchy, Monck began to march south on London, reaching the capital only in February of 1660; on the 8th May the Convention Parliament finally declared Charles II the lawful successor of Charles I and the new King of England. It is thus curious to find the present work with its dedication to Charles II appearing in 1659, long before the official Restoration. Plomer's Dictionary of the Booksellers and Printers who Were at Work in England, Scotland and Ireland from 1641 to 1667 gives us some information on Evan Tyler, who certainly had strong Scottish, and perhaps also Royalist connections: "Printer in Edinburgh, 1633-50; Leith, 1651-2; London: Ducket Court, Aldersgate Street, 1656 (?)-67. Took up his freedom July 1st, 1639. [Arber, iii. 688.] The first entry in the Registers under his name occurs on September 11th, 1644. [Liber D, p. 683.] The history of this printer is involved in much obscurity. He apparently had presses in London and Edinburgh simultaneously. Mr. Aldis, in his List of Books printed in Scotland (p. 122), says, 'Appears to have been in charge of R. Young's Edinburgh business in 1637 and in 1641 returned to Edinburgh in partnership with Young. In the following year Young's name dropped out of the imprints and Tyler continued the style of king's printer. In 1651 he moved to Leith, but seems to have returned to London in 1652-3, being succeeded in Leith by C. Higgins At the Restoration, Tyler once more returned to Edinburgh, resumed the style of king's printer, and printed there from 1660 to 1673.'" Ross is probably best remembered as the supposed author of the first English translation of the Koran, from Du Ryer's French of 1647 (although this attribution remains unproven). On quite another note, William Lauder accused John Milton of plagiarizing passages of Paradise Lost from Ross' Virgilii Evangelisantis Christiados; given that Milton's biblical epic was probably composed around 1658-1663, it is quite likely that he would have consulted the present edition of Ross' text. We note that the 1638 edition is often found without its let.…

First editions of both parts of this English-Hebrew dictionary and grammar, intended to make accessible the language of the Old Testament to every Christian; the first title is the secondary issue of the 1653 A Gate or Door to the Holy Tongue with cancel title page and three additional preliminary leaves, and additionally carries the additional bifolioum bearing a dedication to the author's "respected friend" (another reissue). "A pedagogical revolutionary with an egalitarian message and a passionate and parenthetical style, Robertson believed that Hebrew was not an esoteric language and that almost any man, given plain and careful instruction, could learn Hebrew even without the aid of a teacher so that he might perceive 'truth in its first fountain, and Primitive purity'. He challenged the 'pre-conceived prejudice. that all almost hitherto have had about the difficultie of it'. The student need not know Latin but may study Hebrew through the medium of English, for Hebrew 'hath no more dependence upon, nor nearnesse or connexion with either Latine or Greek; then [sic] with either English or Spanish, or any other Tongue or Language Vulgarly spoken in Europe'.
