Reliure éditeur toile. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. Paris, 2006.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. First edition (French). Hardcover. Paper-covered boards, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Includes texts (in French) by Francesco Bonami, Régis Durand and François Quintin, and an exhibition history and bibliography. 112 pp. with 29 four-color plates (with four 2-page gatefolds). 11-1/4 x 9 inches. Published on the occasion of the 2000 exhibition Thomas Demand at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. Thomas Demand is one of the most important and relevant contemporary artists working today. Demand's starting point is usually an image culled from the mass media, off the Internet, or a low-resolution image discovered in a newspaper or other source during his research. Oftentimes, the picture has become iconic or representative in some way of an importanthistorical, political or culturalevent. He then painstakingly creates by hand, over the course of weeks or even months,afull-size (1:1) sculptural model from colored paper and cardboard. The paper model, in which he deliberately excludes certain specific details, and emphasizes various elements and graphic forms important to the original source image, is then photographed by Demand. This photograph is the final work of art and the paper-model is then destroyed and recycled ("Grotte / Grotto, 2006" is the only existing original paper sculpture). Demand's large-scale photographs deal with our relationship to media in general, and photography in particular. The confluence ofmemory, individualinterpretations and readings, collectivemeanings associated with significant events, are all examined. Hisprocess -- from source material and research, to the meticulous sculptural interpretation, to the final photographic work -- adds to his multi-layered examination ofvisual representation, as well as the problematic"indexical" nature of photography. If one strips away specificity, if the details that allow us to "read" a photograph are reduced to generic bits of unremarkable paper, is the result a denial of what photography intends? If the photograph exists to let us know who we are in space, allows us to decode the details, the light, the "specifics," then Demand turns our perceptions into chaos. In his work, Demand uses sites of historical significance -- visual sites -- and recreates them in painstaking full-size scale models using cardboard and paper. The authenticity of the historical event is suggested, through titles, yet the images are stark and lifeless as enormous vacuums of energy and perception. They are intentionally blank and soul-less, so as to capture the inadequacy of photography's ability to really "capture" historical events. From the publisher: "Behind Thomas Demand's impressive images, fragments of a hyper-realistic and familiar world, appears the singular echo of an 'other reality ,' from the archives, historic, political photos or more generally from media.".

Buch
Trade Paperback. Zustand: New. A meditation on what life has been like for millions of us in 2020: a world broken into fragments that we're still trying to piece together.' -The GuardianAmerican artist Sarah Sze (born 1969) exhibited her first solo show at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain at the turn of the millennium; two decades later, she returns to the exhibition spaces of Jean Nouvel's iconic building in the midst of a similarly contentious global environment with two new sculptures specially created for the occasion. These pieces explore how the contemporary proliferation of images--via print and pixel, from deep space to the deep web--fundamentally changes our relationship to time, memory and the physical presence of objects. This catalog, boasting 48 different covers, was designed in close collaboration with the artist and details the execution of Sze's installation. An essay by philosopher Bruno Latour, a conversation between Sze and Jean Nouvel, and an essay by exhibition curator Leanne Sacramone provide further insight into the process behind this work and Sze's artistic philosophy.

Soft Cover. Zustand: New. Patrick Gries (illustrator). Oblong quarto. (112) pp; 65 color & b/w illustrations. Text in English & French. Paperback. Fine, unused copy. Andrea Branzi (b. 1938) is an architect, graphic designer, and theorist. Founding father of the Domus Academy in Milan and a former member of the legendary radical architecture group Archizoom, he has influenced a whole generation from Gehry to Libeskind, from Koolhaas to Tschumi. For his March-June 2008 exhibition in Paris, he wove together materials such as hemp and bamboo with glass and metal, creating fragile, poetic architectural structures that reconciled the natural with the man-made.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The reference book on the philosophy and aesthetics of Bijoy Jain. From December 9, 2023 to April 21, 2024, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presents an exhibition created by the Indian architecture studio, Studio Mumbai, directed by Bijoy Jain. Inspired by the rhythm of breathing, this exhibition offers a space for reverie and contemplation in dialogue with Jean Nouvel's building. Born in 1965 in Mumbai, Bijoy Jain created Studio Mumbai in 2005. Exploring the links between art, architecture and materials, this human-scale organization is composed of craftsmen and architects who design and build each project themselves, using local resources. Bijoy Jain / Studio Mumbai participated in many exhibitions around the world, including the Venice (2010, 2016) and Chicago (2017) architecture biennals. For the Fondation Cartier, Bijoy Jain unites man and nature, light and shadow, bamboo, brick and stone to form a meditative landscape taking us into the heart of creation. Sculptures, objects and furniture interact with artworks by Chinese painter Hu Liu and Turkish ceramist Alev Ebuezziya Siesbye, invited by the architect, revealing a shared sensibility and ethos between these artists. The catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition invites readers to discover Bijoy Jain's aesthetics and philosophy. Conceived as a work-in-progress of the exhibition, this richly illustrated book focuses on the artist's drawings, photographs of his studio and works in the making. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
