Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Prince's latest monograph-artist's book, replete with signature works, both old and new, across collage, painting and sculptureThis volume is an artist's book and monograph assembled by American conceptual artist Richard Prince (born 1949), best known for his subversive appropriation art that draws on imagery from pop and consumer culture. Folksongs showcases his new body of paintings alongside studio photos and documentation of various sculptures as well as installations of his Upstate series, comprised of original photography taken in upstate New York. Integrating collage, impasto and oil stick, the recent paintings contain a zigzag retrospective of Prince's earlier work, intercut with appropriated photographic images. Repeating motifs include close-up shots of eyeballs, sutured skin and mouths with a cigarette dangling between the teeth, which he has scrawled over and around with swaths of oily pigment and thick, impasto brushstrokes, creating a collage of found imagery and original mark-making. The book also highlights recent sculptures comprised of shredded denim and card tires. Published by Fulton Ryder, Prince's private imprint, Folksongs continues a series of artist's books on both retrospective and new artworks. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Prince explores American celebrity and desire through the lens of Times SquareThis new artists book by Richard Prince (born 1949) revisits a seldom seen body of work made during his "Time Life" years spent around the theaters, grind houses, bars and restaurants of New York's 42nd Street and Times Square. In an introductory essay titled "The Counterfeit Memory," first published in 1981, the artist describes wandering into the Orleans Theater, writing that "I'm not sure who I am when I'm there or if, in fact, I'm comfortable and want to be there at all. One's identity it seems is easily changed when what's in front of you is reversed and transparent, directed and produced."In artworks that include some of his earliest portraits, Prince captures the ephemeral, photographic celebrity of publicity headshots, gossip columns, nightclub advertisements and pornographic films, alongside finely rendered drawings such as "Montgomery Clift as Sigmund Freud" and "George Reeves as Himself." In The Entertainers' concluding essay, "The Lone Ranger," the artist states, "I think I'll go after third place . leave first for the hero." Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. An artist's book of social science fiction presenting new work and writing by Richard PrinceRichard Prince (born 1949) continues his revival of the Fulton Ryder imprint with an artists book that is both a monograph of new artworks and an expansive written statement on art history, personal biography and the contemporary impulse to create self-images. At first glance, the New Paintings are in a similar vein as Prince's New Portraits. However, unlike that series, the New Paintings focuses on portraits of painters painting on Instagram, very often with back to the camera, facing away from the viewer. The resulting images are ambiguously manipulated; the series is self-described as an act of social science fiction. The image captions, integral to the artwork, contain a dense Bird Talk text, including ambiguous autobiography and art history commentary.Joan Katz offers some explanation in a comment found in a New Painting, stating: Deep Nostalgia. Legitimate Doubts. Safeguards to prevent misuse. Digital imitation. Resemblance without manipulations. Skilled impersonations. Staged illusions. Imitation of Life (the sequel). Its difficult to know if its new or just another resurrection. #post_place. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Couverture rigide. Zustand: Neuf. Edition originale. This compilation of works on paper by American appropriation artist Richard Prince (born in 1949) is part of a series entitled 1-2-3-4. Beginning in 2008, Prince began sequencing found photographic portraits into a simple count: one person, two people, three people, four people: 1-2-3-4. This process, applied to musicians, actors, celebrities and anonymous individuals, transforms the photographs into acts of performance: solo artist, duo, trio, quartet. The numbers 1-2-3-4 act like the count-in of a punk/garage rock song (by The Rascals, The Modern Lovers or The Ramones), an archetypal pop song rhythm signature. The numbering of the images gives the sequence an immediate sense of action, while the appropriation of jersey numbers turns it into a sport.
