This catalogue was published on the occasion of Yusuf Sevinçli's exhibition 'Oculus' at Galerist Tepebasi between 14.12.201 7-27.01.2018. The exhibition… comprises analogue, black & white photographs taken mostly in France and Turkey. Taking its title from an old Roman architectural term for a small circular or oval window or the round openings found at the center of domes. Often an oculus allows a concentrated beam of light into an otherwise dark interior and so is threshold between a world of light and one of shadow. In Sevinçli's images we are in a shadow-world in which light, meaning and beauty pass fleetingly, out of reach and into memory. There is a beautiful, poetic intelligence in Sevinçli's photographs. They are, we are told images of actual things and places. The artist's sensibility, however, articulated through the elegant contingencies of the analogue photographic process; the framing of the shot, the manipulation of the negative, the quality of the printing, renders reality dreamlike. The images are a dream-state, rich with ambiguity and metaphor; A flower, silhouetted, becomes epic and architectural. A white circle painted on a dark ground, the casual record of an act of art making takes on occult significance. A woman pulls skin tight like cloth, another's eyes sparkle with light. Stream rises, spectral like from the street. A man in movement, arms outstretched, his head hidden from us, is perhaps dancing or falling. Stairs ascend into luminosity and fiction. Political in their sensibility of oppressive ambiguity, poetic in their search for moments of transcendence, Sevinçli's photographs are exquisite signs, only partially intelligible, full of melancholy and hope.

They have rewritten the rulebook fo…r how to stage seductive voyeurism and activate our imaginations. They take the arena of fashion photography to one where social conventions and strictures can be suspended. The baton handed to them by their creative forebears Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin, who dominated the well of French Vogue through the 1970s, centres on an understanding of human desire - of how to trigger it and, simultaneously, make us conscious of our viewership. We feel this in Mert & Marcus's images when we encounter the darkest stories as if glimpsed through a keyhole into a dreadful and potent other world. Mert & Marcus deploy an assembly of visual cues to stimulate our imaginations. References to radical art movements and notably the Symbolists and Surrealists staccato through their work. We see Gustave Moreau's Salome and Medea, Hans Bellmer's nightmarish dolls, George Platt Lynes's shadowed masculine forms, each recalibrated into contemporary scenes. Mert & Marcus are alchemists of sorts, who make new visual tales that can cause a chain reaction in our memory banks, leaving a far-reaching and indelible mark. Mert & Marcus's understanding of photography remains fundamentally as it began in the early 1990s - as a pluralistic medium grounded in experimentation. From the outset, their creative partnership has been about discovery and the challenge of how to visualise their imaginings. Their photographic signature shifts between the casual and elaborate - the glimpsed and strictly choreographed. At the heart of their modality is a shared history in the post-Punk environment of London where their partnership began in the early 1990s. They take the ultimate individualism of Punk - its defiance of conventions and dark romanticism - and reconfigure it in all of their iconic images. They customise and individualise everything with this sensibility and create fierce protagonists. Of course, they bring their own histories and experiences into play within the stories that they tell. We see, for instance, in their strong use of colour, a resonance with Mert Alas's Turkish heritage, encoded with pre-modern symbolism and ancient emotion. Marcus Piggott's absorption of his parents' connoisseurship of art and antiques is carried into the creative duo's sense of style that turns objects into subjects and stories - creating something new and tangible from what is old. Ceylan's paintings occupy a register somewhere between the mutely homoerotic (as in his portrait of a bloodied and perspiring boxer--possibly an allegory of the artist's own trials) and the overtly sexual (to enter his website "you must be at least 18 years of age" ). Curator Dan Cameron, who has championed the painter, orients him in a tradition of sexually explicit art stemming from Robert Mapplethorpe to Jeff Koons, but points out that the implicit argument of Celyan's work is "a romantic arguing for the wholesomeness of gay male sexuality.".

The blackness of this special material, the flames that transform it as well as the crater, known as the flaming Door to…Hell, in the middle of the Karakum Desert are the source of the artist's investigation into images of darkness and closure. Focusing on a series of relationships that are central to art, science and mythologies such as those between the concepts of production and destruction, chaos-balance, black holes and universe(s), Nil Yalter observes Hasköy, a neighborhood in Istanbul currently undergoing a process of urban transformation, through its streets and its sand-casting foundry workshops. Travelling through the flaming hole inside one small workshop towards the center of the Earth, the artist sees Piet Mondrian's meticulous perfectionism and geometry in the metal machine of another master. The exhibition comprises analogue, black&white photographs taken mostly in France and Turkey. Taking its title from an old Roman architectural term for a small circula…r or oval window or the round openings found at the center of domes. Often an oculus allows a concentrated beam of light into an otherwise dark interior and so is threshold between a world of light and one of shadow. In Sevincli's images we are in a shadow-world in which light, meaning and beauty pass fleetingly, out of reach and into memory. There is a beautiful, poetic intelligence in Sevincli's photographs. They are, we are told images of actual things and places. The artist's sensibility, however, articulated through the elegant contingencies of the analogue photographic process; the framing of the shot, the manipulation of the negative, the quality of the printing, renders reality dreamlike.
