Delightfully pensive study of one of the great jazz composers, apparently unpublished. "There is no doubt that Swee' Pea, as Ellington called him, made an immense impact on his boss's music. Even if he had done no more than write "Lush Life" and "Take the 'A' Train", Strayhorn would still have been guaranteed a place in jazz history" (Cook & Morton). Strayhorn (1915-1967) started writing for Ellington in 1939 and within a year was arranging songs for the band. "The two men established a collaboration so tight that it was difficult even for people who knew the music well to tell their work apart" (Collier, p. 255). Aside from "Lush Life" and "A Train" Strayhorn's other inextinguishable composition is the noirish and smouldering "Chelsea Bridge" - particularly in the versions by Ducal tenorists Paul Gonsalves and Ben Webster. The lensman is almost certainly Burt Goldblatt (1924-2006), one of the preeminent jazz photographers, who captured countless memorable images over a lengthy career, alongside his work as an award-winning album cover designer. An image by Goldblatt that shows Ellington and Strayhorn working through a number in the studio has Strays wearing the same floral print shirt and rolled zip-neck sweater; the date is probably sometime in the mid-50s. "Goldblatt used black-and-white photographs for his LP album covers, including studio shots and portraits that captured musicians in simple, unguarded moments" (LA Times obituary). James Lincoln Collier, The Making of Jazz: A Comprehensive History, 1978; Richard Cook and Brian Morton, The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, ninth edition, 2008. Original silver gelatin print ( "8 x 10", 259 x 204 mm), overall 427 x 370 mm framed and glazed. A couple of minor creases otherwise in excellent condition.

Superb group of candid images of Miles and Mulligan captured by celebrated jazz photographer Burt Goldblatt and dating to the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, in many ways Davis's breakthrough appearance. As the trumpeter himself said, "I wasn't really popular at this time, but that began to change after I played at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955. [George Wein] had an All-Star band that had Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan, Monk, Percy Heath, Connie Kay; he later added me. They played a couple of tunes without me and then I joined them on "Now's the Time," which was a tribute to Bird's memory. And then we played "'Round Midnight," Monk's tune. I played it with a mute and everybody went crazy. It was something" (Miles: The Autobiography, p. 181). Miles appears alone in 17 images and twice with Mulligan, apparently backstage; in one of these Gerry is lighting Miles's cigarette and in the other, Davis is checking the baritonist's attire. Those of Miles alone showing him reading, tending a houseplant, sitting with his horn and looking reflective. A single shot shows him playing onstage in the "white jacket and black bow tie" mentioned by Goldblatt in his Newport Jazz Festival: An Illustrated History, the photographer noting that, "it was a completely unscheduled appearance. He had shaken off the junk and personal problems that had led the jazz establishment to write him off. [on "'Round Midnight"] Miles played with great emotion. His solo, particularly after the bridge, had a clarity and austerity that were to mark much of his later work. He got at something more than the truth. The audience sat spellbound. Newport was a turning point in his career". Mulligan is pictured in five images, showing him onstage with a group of horn players - Kai Winding and Bud Shank are identifiable - two of these being very atmospheric shots employing deep chiaroscuro, something of a Goldblatt trademark. The lensman's New York Times obituary described him as "a prolific designer of moody jazz LP album covers. In the early 1950s, after the introduction of the LP, the most progressive American cover designs were created for jazz albums, and Mr. Goldblatt was among the pioneers in establishing the cool-jazz style. It encompassed black-and-white portraits and studio photographs, inspired by film noir, as well as gritty street scenes, often abstractly overlaid with flat colours, evoking a sense of urban night life" (7 September 2006, retrieved 22 November 2019). Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe, Miles: The Autobiography, Picador (1990); Goldblatt, Newport Jazz Festival: The Illustrated History (1977); Vail, Miles' Diary, p. 68. Two sheets measuring 253 x 202 mm, the other 280 x 215 mm; studio wet stamps to verso of the smaller. One sheet a little creased, two images with slight show-through from wet stamp, another two with faint blue ink splashes but overall in very good condition.
