Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. If you like epics like Leon Uris and James A. Michener, you may like the shorter, Road From Odessa: A heartwarming thriller where jazz and the mafia collide in Ukraine, New York and New England - A Family's Century of Sin and Song. The book captures Goodman's active imagination and evokes the reader's deepest emotions. It tells the tale of an Eastern European immigrant family who has the determination, resilience, and willingness to do whatever it takes to survive. In the port city of Odessa, Ukraine, "The Fox" is a charismatic and ruthless patriarch who dominates the Russian Jewish Mafia. His life story, a brutal blend of love and tragedy, is shaped by a world of power and violence. When the family is ravaged by one of many devastating pogroms, The Fox's young son makes a heart-wrenching escape to America. Carrying the weight of his gangster heritage as well as an extraordinary musical talent, the son finds himself navigating a new American world and its crime syndicates. His story unfolds in the tumultuous first half of the 20th century. He steps on people to climb the ranks of the underworld. His successes and tragedies mirror the vibrant energy of American Jazz, the new world of rum-running and speakeasies, and the glamour of casinos. He is a witness to a world forever changed by the invention of the phonograph and telephone, the first automobiles and airplanes, and the economic devastation of the Great Depression. His life becomes intertwined with the era's conflicts, from the battlefields of World War I to the tense years leading up to World War II. The ultimate crisis arises not from the streets of the New York and New England, but from the geopolitical stage. As the Nazi war machine rises to power, the President of the United States finds himself without a solution. The novel's climactic challenge is now no longer a matter of crime or power--it is a struggle for survival. Goodman's development of characters is deep. The Road from Odessa is rich in historical details as well as moral complexities. This item is printed on demand. Couverture rigide. Zustand: Comme neuf. Edition originale. New York , 2021. Hardback , Quarto size . Reliure éditeur illustrée. Format in-4° ------ 640 pages . ********************* "" The sixth and final volume of this exceptional catalogue raisonné project features over 360 works made by John Baldessari (1931-2020) between 2011 and 2019. Here, Baldessari continues his longstanding tradition of borrowing from artists as varied as David Hockney, Giotto, Gustave Courbet, Maria Lassnig, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Giorgio Morandi, and Jackson Pollock. Many of the works in this volume are a testament to the artist's fascination and engagement with art from previous eras. In one example, Baldessari's 2012 series "Double Bill" combines scenes from pairs of paintings, such as a Willem de Kooning face atop a Jean Dubuffet body, with the words, "And Dubuffet" painted beneath: Baldessari is effectively collaborating with artists he has revered for years. This volume also surveys Baldessari's complete film and video output, from 1968 to 2004, as well as the artist's books he made, from 1972 to 2019. Additionally, an appendix catalogues works, mostly pre-1974, that were unknown at the time Volume 1 was published. "" ********************* ref fav-08-75379.…

Couverture rigide. Zustand: Comme neuf. Edition originale. New York , 2018. Hardback , Quarto size . Reliure éditeur illustrée. Format in-4° ------ 533 pages . ********************* ""This volume covers six years, from 2005 - 2010, in which Baldessari created a total of 361 unique works-comprising eight discrete series, most with multiple parts or, to borrow a musical phrase, "movements." The majority of the works from this period have as their subject the face and body: noses, ears, arms, legs, elbows, knees, eyes, eyebrows, foreheads, hands, and feet. We might entertain this as the artist finally revealing to the viewer what he previously had taken such great pains to conceal and obscure with his trademark colored disks and erasures. Perhaps this is partly true, but since his earliest days as an artist, Baldessari has never felt comfortable providing the viewer with the full picture. "" ********************* ref fav-08-75379.…

Couverture rigide. Zustand: Comme neuf. Edition originale. New York , 2014. Hardback , Quarto size . Reliure éditeur illustrée. Format in-4° ------ 496 pages . ********************* "" Brand New Book. Compiling four-hundred-plus unique works of art, this volume traces the shifts and developments in conceptual artist John Baldessari s work from 1975-86. It covers his photo-based works such as the Strobe, Word Chain, and Pathetic Fallacy series from 1975; the Violent Space and the seminal Concerning Diachronic/Synchronic Time: Above, On, Under (With Mermaid), from 1976; and the Blasted Allegories series from 1977-78, which drew heavily from the artist s vast collection of photo stills taken from commercial television. In the 1980s, Baldessari s art took a different direction, beginning with the expansive Fugitive Essays triptychs from 1980 and leading to 1982 s photographic interpretations of Grimm s Fairy Tales. Building on these themes, Baldessari began producing a body of work that was inspired in part by dreams, psychology, film, and popular culture. Ensuing works were more formal, elaborate, and large-scale. From 1984 to 1986 Baldessari created a number of works that employed his soon-to-be-signature colored discs painted over people s faces in the photos. An introductory essay will provide a close reading of selected works and a historical context for understanding Baldessari s art from this period. A detailed chronology and exhibition history and bibliography are also included. This is the second of a projected four-volume catalogue raisonne ************************** ref fav-08-75379.…
