Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu.

, Abstract: 1.

The UK government faced unprecedented levels of public protest during the run up to the conflict as well as a hostile reception from former United Nations (UN) allies over whether to join America in invading.Winning the 'hearts and minds' of all stakeholders was crucial if the invasion was to be supported and justified, and the UK government undoubtedly employed public relations (PR) techniques to attempt to do just that. This essay argues that PR plays a part in the build up of any conflict, and discusses the relationship between PR and propaganda in wartime. It puts forward Tony Blair's role in 'selling' the conflict to the British public, how his own brand of public relations helped massage public opinion, and how intelligence, the issue of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and the use of the phrase 'war on terror' were used to package the war conveniently for the public. It also examines the British media's reporting of the build up of the conflict and questions whether it was the subject of management by the UK government, and to what extent it influenced UK public opinion on the issue. 16 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, Queen's University Belfast, language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes modern insurgency and emphasizes some of the difficulties and dilemmas in contemporary counter-insurgency policy-making in Iraq. The analysis starts with the definition (s) and structural components of an insurgency. Differences between classic and modern insurgencies are underlined with the aim of presenting the evolution and adjustability of insurgent warfare. Modern insurgency is becoming increasingly networked, transnational, tactical and diverse in its methods. Conventional means are increasingly used against soft targets causing maximum loss and damage. A metastasis of warfare from the rural terrain to the urban domain has complicated efforts to counter violence. The paper argues that the question over 'doctrine versus flexibility in counter-insurgency policy-making should be thoroughly re-examined. Given that insurgencies are social events, deeply rooted in the social and economic conditions of a society, responses to violence should focus on breaking the very conditions leading to radicalization and recruitment. Expanding the scope of counter-insurgency beyond military engagement, devising timely responses and negotiating with local militant actors are much more important aspects for ending a crisis that could escalate into insurgency or civil war. 16 pp. Englisch.…

On the one hand, to decay just means to die or more literally to rot. This is not a pleasant process, but a process that cannot be stopped and must take place according to the natural way of life/the laws of nature. On the other hand, decay does not only have this negative connotation because to decay in nature also means that something new is developing out of the dead material. Only when something, like an apple for example, dies, a new generation of apples can arise. These two different points of view are shown in the poems ''Tis the Last Rose of Summer' by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and 'On Observing a Large Red-streak Apple' by Philip Freneau (1752-1832). 16 pp. Englisch.…

It examines the results by comparing the speakers' levels of non-rhoticity and broad a to the factor of their gender. On the one hand, I decided to examine the features of non-rhoticity and broad a, because these features are most prominent for this particular dialect of American English. 'Two major New England shibboleths are the 'dropping' of post-vocalic r(as in [ka:] car and [ba:n] barn) and the low central vowel [ ] in the BATH class, words like aunt and glass.' (Carver, 1987: 21)On the other hand, I have recognized that there is a lack of examination of the mentioned features especially with regard to the speakers' gender and if these results would be conform with the sociolinguistic statement of women showing a strongertendency towards standard or prestige variants in their speech communities. (Schönweitz, 2001: 2)As the basis of this analysis I decided to use speech data of the two main characters of the American television series Family Guy, which is known for being presented in the typical Eastern New England (ENE) dialect. The structure of my paper is divided into the following sections: an overview of the topic as well as the two features under examination, a description of the methodology used in this study and a section of the results which will take a look at my findings. Afterwards, a conclusion follows with implications on further research. 16 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Pre-University Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - English - Miscellaneous, grade: 15, Maristen-Gymnasium, Furth, language: English, abstract: A tall, black-haired man with a receding hairline is sitting in a cushioned armchair, holding a pipe in his left hand, while extending his right arm in a forward gesture. The room is wrapped in smoke. The man's sharp facial features, his posture and his eyes gazing at the ceiling towards the far corner of the room all show his concentration. He is fully absorbed in thought, being neither irritated by the heavy clouds of smoke coming from his pipe, nor by the presence of another man in the room. He, who is apparently also preoccupied in thought, gazes at a lamp, which is illuminating the table in front of him and the still blank sheets of paper on which he intends to write. The room is filled with several items, which probably belong to one of the two men sitting in there: A violin, swords, a shield, two filled book shelves, several paintings, boxing gloves, and various other objects one would or would not expect to find in a Victorian home in London. But this is not just any home sometime in the late 19th century London, it is 221B Baker Street in 1881.This was a glimpse into the home of the consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, as portrayed by the artist Nis Jessen. But who was Sherlock Holmes He is probably the best known detective in the world and if you were to ask a Holmes enthusiast, you would probably be told that he was 'the greatest detective of all time'. There are even some people who actually believe that he was a real person and is not a fictional creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The aim of this paper is to portray as many facets of Mr Holmes as possible, including his biography, his character, his methods of work, his personal relationships, his archenemy and, of course, his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 28 pp. Englisch.…

It is important to see beyond the prevalent plot of the movie, the love story between Danny and Sandy, and to concentrate in more detail on supporting roles andthe overall atmosphere. Of course, Grease would not be Grease without its music. The 50s do not only mark the birth of a new style of music, Rock and Roll, but also of a new culture, that of teenagers, a fact which is clearly reflected in Grease. Thus, I will first look at Rock and Roll, and its effects on the development of a youth culture, and then point out a few problems these changes brought with them. 28 pp. Englisch.…

The eagle's loss of freedom and forced subjugation under a situation constrained by authorities echo Wordsworth's description of the experience of his younger self. Similar to the eagle, the poet-figure in Tintern Abbey experiences a loss of that intensely emotional, unmediated engagement with the world. Wordsworth's insight that he has received 'abundant recompense' for this loss is foreshadowed in its incipience also in Goethe's poem.In order to establish this thesis, the first part of the paper provides an in-depth analysis of The Eagle and the Dove, elaborating on the concept of the romantic genius advanced by Goethe in the figure of the eagle. This analysis will also take into account differences between the English translation by Edgar Alfred Bowring and the German original, as the translation is not always felicitous. Since it would be beyond the scope of this paper to do a close reading of both poems in their entirety, the following part concentrates on a few central passages from Tintern Abbey, delineating the similarities between both poems with respect to the experience of the poet figure. Finally, it will analyse how Wordsworth transcends the loss of his former experience in relation to a similar development implicit in Goethe's poem. 20 pp. Englisch. …

The Philippines is one of the first signatories to the UN Declaration on Human Rights. Signatories of the declaration recognize that these standards impose obligations, duties and commitments on them to comply and enforce in their respective territorial state. The the practice of human rights heavily relies on the political, economic, and cultural dynamics of a certain state. This monism follows the generally accepted principle that the enforcement of human rights is in the hands of the states. Thus, can being a signatory to the declaration make a difference in the protection and respect of human rights This paper looks at the case of the Philippine government under the Arroyo administration, as a signatory to the declaration, and how it performs in the field of human rights particularly with regard to the spate of extrajudicial killings by revisiting the reports of Melo commission and UN-designated Special Rapporteur, Philip Alston, on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Then, the paper proceeds with a discussion on the effect of ratifying an internationally-accepted declaration on the Philippine government in the hope of an end to the killings. 16 pp. Englisch. …

The two separate dwelling- places of Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego, Mr. Hyde, can be analyzed in psychoanalytical terms as representing the conscious and the unconscious. The suppressed desires of the unconscious, which are related to a discourse of homosexuality underwriting the novel, return to haunt and ultimately destroy the mind of Dr. Jekyll. This paper will examine how the city functions as a mirror of the human mind. It takes a more general approach at first, analyzing different descriptions of the city throughout the novel. As a second step towards establishing the evidence to support the thesis, it will be necessary to take a closer look at the specific geography of Dr. Jekyll's psyche, arguing that the separate dwelling places of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde represent the conscious and the unconscious in terms of Freudian psychoanalysis. Finally, the paper will examine how this reading allows for an interpretation of Dr. Jekyll's hidden desires as being related to homosexuality.Other interpretations concerning these vices are possible and not mutually exclusive with the one pursued in this paper, as, for example, a reading of Jekyll's mental and physical descent as due to alcoholism and drug abuse. However, a broader analysis taking into account these additional interpretations would be beyond the scope of this paper. It will therefore focuse on the evidence that supports the idea of a homosexual discourse in the novel. 16 pp. Englisch. …

On the one side the GmbH could be used for every business and it is proven. But you need not less than 25.000 EUR to start your business under this legal structure. Moreover the Limited is also proven, but there is the problem that you need a registered office probably far away from your generally business location. But the advantage of this legal structure is that there is no need to have any initial capital. The SPE is maybe a great legal structure but nobody could know this because it is not tested. The idea of this form of organization in my opinion is a quite good brainchild. Now it depends on you, than all these legal structures are for capital companies and they are generally used for low and mid-level business. The most important fact is that your responsibility is limited. 16 pp. Englisch.…

The following essay will give an overview over Mughal architecture and hopefully help understanding the ideas behind it. In the very beginning, it explains the origins of the Mughal dynasty. It focuses in further detail on the four emperors Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, for they are considered the most important forces in terms of changing the landscape of Mughal India. The resume will provide some overall thoughts and the results of the analysis of the emperors' different styles in (urban) planning, building, decorating and patronizing. 16 pp. Englisch.…

A husband, who treasures a nineteenth-century criminal's penis in a jar, 'disappears' his wife into a surfaceless plane. A man revenges himself by pouring a pan of boiling oil into the lap of an antagonizing co-worker. An Aunt forces her nephew to don dress and blonde wig before coming down to dinner. Welcome to the world of Ian McEwan' (Slay 9).Ian Russell McEwan was born on the 21st of June in 1948 in Aldershot, England, as the only son of David and Rose McEwan. He spent most his childhood in military outposts such as Singapore and Libya because his father was a soldier of the British army. After having attended a boarding school in Suffolk, he enters the University of Sussex in 1966 where he began writing fiction and also achieved his BA degree in English literature in 1970. One year later he obtained his MA degree at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. In 1975 he published his first short story collection, First Love, Last Rites, which was his Master thesis in the subject 'creative writing'. The shocking stories that are arranged in First Love, Last Rites brought him immediate critical compliments and he won the Somerset Maugham Award for their intelligent skills and originality. Most of these stories deal with abnormal sexuality, disorganized family life or claustrophobic tales. In his Short Stories, McEwan wrote at the beginning of his career, the protagonists are mostly children or young persons who tell the stories as first person narrators. Wolfgang G. Müller says in his interpretation of the Short story First Love, Last Rites that 'the attention is drawn to the developmental stage of adolescence with its psychological problems that are especially linked to the first sexual experiences and to the search of gender identity' (translated from Müller 266). Ian McEwan became well known for his 'new way of dealing with the topic of initiation where he places special emphasis on transgress and perverse sexual behaviour and also on criminal aspects' (translated from Müller 266). In this term paper the title story First Love, Last Rites will be analysed in the context of initiation and adolescence. Hereby, I will firstly introduce some important terms so that I can go on with explaining what an initiation story is. The last part then will be about the short story itself where I will summarize and analyse FLLR 16 pp. Englisch.…

(Auster, 1985; 3)Paul Auster's anti-detective novel City of Glass is the story of a man, whose life accidentally angles off. More and more, he blunders into the complexity of a criminal case in search of the significant principle. Obsessively, he adapts his action to the stranger until he finally loses hisself.Although Auster's novel, which is based on the nature and the function of language, is rather non-visual, Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli succeeded in adopting it into a graphic novel that is more than just a translation from one genre into another. They managed to create a visual language full of metaphors, symbols and icons that add a new layer of meaning to the story. This is the reason why I decided to pick City of Glass: The graphic novel as the basis of my term paper. This thesis will argue that a graphic adaptation of a literary work can be more than just an illustrated copy of a superior novel and worth an analysis onits own. Furthermore, I will take a deeper look at the visual language, specifically, the visual metaphors and symbols, which build up the graphic novel and how these finding can be adapted into learning situations.First of all, I will give a summary of City of Glass: the novel followed by a definition of the anti-detective genre with the intention to point out, that the visual language of City of Glass: the graphic novel reflects this genre. Afterwards, a survey of thegraphic novel as well as an analysis of its structure and composition and its visual language and symbolism is given. A brief outline of how these findings can be useful in teaching and learning situations will precede the conclusion. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Lesson Plan from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: This lesson is mainly about the future tenses, will-future and going-to future. My intention is to teach the study group both the formation of the tenses as well as the usage, when exactly to use which tense in order to express something in the future. Therefore I planned a double period where the first lesson is only about the formation of the future tenses and the aim of the second lesson is to make clear to the learners when to use the will-future or the going-to-future.I did not yet have the opportunity to give this lesson in reality, so I assumed a class in which this lesson could work the way I planned it. too personal1.1.Situation of the classI would provide this double period with its focus on the future tenses, will-future and going-to-future, for a class in the late 6th or early 7th grade at secondary school . While planning, I assumed that the pupils already heard about the building of the tenses and do know that these tenses are used to talk about the future but that they have to practice how to build certain sentences like positive statements, negotiations as well as questions. What will be completely new to them, is the question when exactly to use which tense in order to express something in the future. That means concerning the formation of the tenses this lesson will be a repetition for them, but concerning the usage this lesson presents an introduction. It is important that the study group is motivated to work as there are many parts where they have to be proactive. Moreover, it is a precondition that they learned to work with a partner as well as in a group of minimum three pupils otherwise this lesson could not be realized.1.1.Objectives and aimsThe superordinated aim of this lesson is that the study group knows how to form and when to use the future tenses, will-future and going-to-future. The main idea hereby is that they learn to gather from many examples to a general rule, what is called inductive learning. 'It gives you opportunities to work out rules for yourself and to work out what is the most probable choice in particular contexts.' This concept represents the basis of all learning activities in this lesson. However, there are many intermediate aims of the lesson. At the beginning the pupils train to listen carefully to a song in order to fill in the gaps that are missing in the cloze text. They have to concentrate on the song individually and try to understand someone whose mother tongue is English. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.7, Technical University of Braunschweig (Englisches Seminar), course: Survey Course: British Literature I, language: English, abstract: ''Beowulf'' and ''Hamlet'' are probably two of the best-known works in British literature. Both deal with themes that are in many aspects interesting and fascinating to us modern human-beings. They are stories about royalty, heroism, honor, love, glory, hate and revenge. Ingredients that are even today essentially for every movie which is supposed to bring in money. But during the bygone ages ''Beowulf' and ''Hamlet' take place in, making money was not the only goal. The authors wanted to deliver certain messages to the audience. In this work I will concentrate on the concepts of honor and revenge in both texts. What is considered as honorable Which behaviour is typical for a coward How important is revenge and how can it be achieved And, most important, how does these concepts differ if you take a closer look on ''Beowulf'' and ''Hamlet'' What are the differences between the ages To answer this questions it will be important to compare the main characters, as there are Beowulf and Hamlet. Both of them are confronted with situations in which decisions have to be made. Decisions on how to act, on how to react to different events and threats in their lives. By watching the characters, it should be possible to point out differences and similarities between them. I suspect that there are quite a lot of differences, because ''Hamlet'' several hundred years younger than ''Beowulf''. Therefore some concepts (e.g. that of revenge) may have changed during the time. At first I will do a critical assessment on the sources I used for this paper. I think this is very important, because over the years a lot of different varieties of both texts were published. The second step will be to analyse them in order to gather information about the plot as well as the characters and their behaviour. At that point I used also some secondary literature and essays which you can find in the bibliography at the end. By doing so it should be possible to draw a sufficient conclusion and to answer the questions stated above. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Rhetoric / Elocution / Oratory, grade: 1,3, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, course: Allgemeine Rhetorik, language: English, abstract: Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address has played a powerful role in shaping American public discourse over the centuries. It has become one of the central documents in the evolution of American civil religion - imbued with religious and biblical language and imagery, backed by the ethos of its orator, its rhetoric sanctifies the founding documents and itself becomes part of the canon of 'holy writ' of American civil religion. This is all the more remarkable considering the fact that Lincoln was originally only supposed to deliver a few appropriate remarks at the dedication of the Gettysburg battlefield as a cemetery for the fallen soldiers. The main speaker, Edward Everett, had already given a long speech when Lincoln's turn came. The situation which thus presented itself to the orator posed a considerable challenge, as the audience was already weary. It is therefore all the more fascinating to see how Lincoln succeeded in his short, dense speech - which did not even give the photographer sufficient time to take his picture - in molding American identity by fusing 'organic union with transcendent purpose by utilizing the religious symbolism of the Christian tradition' (White 97).This paper will examine how the Gettysburg Address came to be one of the central documents of American civil religion, which had a significant influence on all future public discourse.First, it will provide a brief discussion of Abraham Lincoln as an orator. This aspect is important insofar as it is necessary to determine what role his personal ethos played in the Gettysburg Address. The main part will offer a close reading of the Gettysburg Address, focusing on an in-depth analysis of the rhetorical strategies and stylistic devices Lincoln employs. This part is concerned especially with the question of how these strategies contribute to the enduring significance of the Gettysburg Address as a central document of American civil religion. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Münster (Englisches Seminar), course: Samuel Richardson, language: English, abstract: By its publication, the novel 'Pamela' became one of the most popular contemporary books of that time. One of the reasons for the enormous success of 'Pamela' might have been that more and more women got interested in literature, especially in romantic novels or religious works. All in all, the era was dominated by a commercialization of literature, the rise of the realism and of the moralistic-didactic intentions, which implicated a change of the recipients of literature. Moreover, it entailed a decline of the aristocratic ideals and a rise of the lower middle class and its moral concepts . Also characteristic for that era, as already mentioned, are the so-called 'conduct books', that aimed to educate the reader in the comportment in social life.Richardson, who was part of the lower middle class, with his novel 'Pamela' is completely in step with the social spirit of that time. The topic of a young girl who is anxious of keeping her virtue is not new, but Richardson added this attribute to a servant girl, which is, even for that time, quite exceptional. 'Servant girls (.) constituted a fairly important part of the reading public, and they found it particularly difficult to marry. (.) Richardson's heroine symbolised the aspirations of all the women in the reading public who were subject to the difficulty of getting married.' Fielding, as a part of the aristocracy, criticized and satirized the over-morality that was presented in Richardson's novel and, furthermore, mocks Richardson's style in various way. Yet, all in all Fielding considers Richardsons moralistic and chaste point of view as an ambigious and even dissembling furtiveness. 20 pp. Englisch. …
