In den WarenkorbFull-Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Second Edition. 73 of the 75 volumes of this set. This is a new edition dating from 1790. This set was originally published in 1779. All are in good to very good condition with rubbing to the spine and around the edges and some light marking and edge wear to the front and rear panels. Each volum…e has gilt decorations and three title panels on the spine: At the top this is burgundy and has 'Johnson's Poets' on it and this is present and more or less complete on 54 volumes; in the centre it is black and has the names of the poets in the volume on it and this is present on 38 volumes; and at the bottom there should be a small black panel with the volume number - this has proved the most fragile and is now only present on 3 volumes. There is a little browning to the page edges. Each volume has the original owner's bookplate - this was Alfred Octavius Hartley, M.A. of Steeple Ashton Vicarage in Wells in Norfolk. There is a little browning to the endpapers. The pages are also slightly browned with marks and stains to a few volumes but they are generally free from any spotting. The set deals with the life and work of 66 poets. Volumes 1-6 contain the lives of the poets and the final two volumes contain a general index. The remaining volumes contain the works of the poets. Some volumes contain the works of more than one poet while for the major poets several volumes are devoted to their work. Because this is a set of 73 volumes there will be an additional postage charge so if this is a concern please make contact before ordering so the different options can be discussed.

In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [vi], xix, [i], 281, [1] blank, [6] glossary; contemporary marbled calf, gilt, spine gilt (rubbed, but sound); edges attractively decorated in blue. First edition: one of 138 copies on 'superfine paper'. A remarkable 20-page subscription list includes 735 names in all (for 856 copies), among them Garrick, Goldsmith, Smo…llett, Richardson, and many other notables; Samuel Johnson is recorded as having ordered a copy, like this one, on fine paper. Francis Fawkes (1720-1777) was widely regarded by Johnson and his circle as the best translator since the days of Pope. This interesting volume of poems includes translations of three Latin poems by Christopher Smart, whose wife also appears as a subscriber, the poet being then confined to an asylum. The most substantial pieces are two translations from the Scottish dialect of Gawin Douglas, 'A Description of May' and 'A Description of Winter', both of which required a glossary at the end of the volume. A few of the poems were written before 1750, but as Foxon points out, none was separately published; of particular interest is 'Bramham-Park' (1745), a topographical description of the Yorkshire country seat belonging to George Fox-Lane. There is no errata slip here, as in ordinary copies; copies on fine paper were often run off last, and presumably the errata have been corrected. Provenance: the poet John Drinkwater (1882-1937), with his book label, signature (1923), and pencilled note. Foxon p. 269; Eddy and Fleeman, Preliminary hand-list of books to which Johnson subscribed, 25; Mahony and Rizzo, Christopher Smart, 647.

In den WarenkorbSlim oblong 8vo. (274 x 95 mm). [35 unnumbered leaves]. Leaf with title, blank leaf and 33 leaves, each with a triptych in matching format throughout composed of two facing profile monochrome photographic portraits of the same men at left and right and between a monochrome photograph of a weapon; all leaves printed recto only, p…ublication details to rear inner wrapper. Original publisher's spiral bound printed wrappers with titles to front cover in black. A very fine copy of John Baldessari's artist book 'Brutus Killed Ceasar'. Baldessari is well known for using disparate elements of everyday life in his photographically generated works of art. In this, one of his earliest printed artists' books he juxtaposes three images in a linear format using two photographic portraits of a younger and older man facing each other with a photograph of a common household object between them. Each leaf repeats the same portraits but illustrates a different 'murder weapon' or more mundane item that might be (or has been at some point) used to commit a murder: a kitchen knife, a wooden board, a magnifying glass, a book of matches, pushpins, a banana skin, an arrow, an apple etc. Baldessari's book was published thanks to 'The Emily H. Davis Art Gallery of the University of Akronwith the cooperation of the Sonnabend Gallery New York and The Ohio State University Columbus'. (see rear inner wrapper). There is one very small bump to one corner (the upper right corner at spine of the front cover)otherwise the fragile book is in excellent condition. [John Baldessari.,The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 1990, pg. 247; Moeglin-Delcroix, Esthétique du livre d'artiste, pg. 275].

In den WarenkorbFull Leather. Zustand: Very Good binding. First Edition Thus. Volume I: [2], 8, 43, xviii, 184, [2], viii, 4, 286; Volume II: [4], 231, [4], 176, (restarting at 157)-182; Volume III: [2], vi, iii, 38 [inserted half title] 39-191, [6], 253; Volume IV: [8], 318, [2], ii, 237; Volume V: [4], 258, [4], 144 (printer error in paginati…on skipping to) 153-232; Volume VI: [4] 210, [2], iii, 218; Volume VII: [lacking half title], iii-viii, 230, iv, 49, 58-221; Volume VIII: xxiii, 278, vii, 196, 195-279, publishers advertisement on verso; Volume X: xxxi, 288; Volume XI: [2], viii, 322; Volume XII: viii, 295; Volume XIII: viii, 320. This is the first of the important Hawkesworth editions, lacking Volume IX and the supplementary Volume XIV which were published in 1775 and 1779 respectively, the last of the volumes printed. Given the nearly 25-year span over which the printing took place it is remarkably difficult to find sets of this edition complete. Volumes I-VI (1755); VII (1763-4); VIII (1765); X-XI (1766); XII-XIII (1768); [lacking Volumes IX (1775) and XIV (1779)]. Full bound in contemporary mottled calf with morocco title and volume labels (through numbered I-XII) with some chipping and loss. 19th century rebacks to some volumes; more recently, damage to spines and boards have been repaired; though there is cracking and tenderness to some spines, they are now relatively stable. All volumes offered are from the First Quarto Edition except the Letters X & XI which appear to be a reprint dated the same year as the First Edition. Volume X states "New Edition," and both X & XI have a variant collation from what Teerink suggests; both appear complete. All volumes complete but for Volume VII which is lacking a half title. All 26 full-page copperplate engravings plus 4 pages of Cantata are present as called for by Teerink. Notably, the same engravings were used for the octavo editions. Only the quarto edition has a large frame around the image to make it congruous to the page size. This copy belonged to Sir John Frederick, Baronet of Burwood House and bears his very tasteful engraved bookplate in most volumes. (Teerink 87). Very Good binding.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, large folio, [2], 2pp., without the list of subscribers, engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates with a total of 26 portraits of royalists, letter-press title and preface, some minor spotting and light browning but overall the plates are very clean and bright, expertly rebound in cont. style calf calf, marble…d boards, red morocco spine label, an attractive copy. Rare: ESTC locates only three copy in the UK (all at Oxford) and four copies in North America. A reason for the scarcity of the complete volume may be found in a note on the title page, which advises that: "As these Prints are an agreeable Ornament for Rooms, they may be had of the Proprietors in neat black Frames and Glasses". Vertue's parents had served in the court of the exiled James II, and the publication of this volume in praise of loyal servants to the Stuart crown in the year of Culloden may well suggest Jacobite sympathies. This may be signalled by couplet from Pope quoted in the frontispiece: "Rich Industry Sat Smiling on the Plain | And Peace, and Plenty, told a Stuart's reign.".
