Trade Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Harrison, Jack - Design (illustrator). Second Printing. 179 Pages. No defects noted and interior text pages are flawless. Laid in is an interesting letter to the previous owner with an extensive review of this book. An astonishing report on combat's psychological tolls the author, an army intelligence officer-turned-academician sounds a startling note here. War has become an activity that has surpassed the ability of human beings to endure it. He arrays substantial and convincing evidence to support this assertion, beginning with a horrifying inventory of contemporary nonnuclear weaponry. driving home the point that conventional warfare is now 600 percent more destructive than during WWII. He goes on to examine the symptoms of psychological collapse in war, then looks at governments' strenuous but largely futile attempts to stave off these symptoms and their underlying causes. A frightening summary of on-going research into stress-preventive chemicals follows chemicals that transform soldiers into fighting machines, but at the sacrifice of their humanity. This powerful book deserves a wide audience. The author is professor of politics at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., served twenty-two years as an active intelligence officer, much of it spent at the Directorate of Foreign Intelligence in the Pentagon. A consultant to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, he is the author of numerous books on military subjects, including Operation Peace for Galilee, Military Incompetence, and Crisis in Command. Contents: Introduction, The Face of Modern War, War and Madness, War and the Limits of Human Endurance, Psychiatry in War, The Chemical Soldier, No More War, and Notes.

Octavo, charcoal boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xxx, 559 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The career of John Charles Fremong (1813-90) celebrates and ties together the full breadth of American expansionism, from its eighteenth-century origins through its culmination in the Gilded Age. Tom Chaffin's important new biography demonstrates Fremont's vital importance to the history of American empire, and his role in shattering long-held myths about the ecology and habitability of the American West. As the most celebrated American explorer and mapper of his time, Fremont stood at the center of the vast federal project of Western exploration and conquest. His expeditions between 1838 and 1854 captured the public's imagination, inspired Americans to accept their nation's destiny as a vast continental empire, and earned him his enduring sobriquet, "the Pathfinder." But Fremont was more than an explorer. Chaffin's dramatic narrative includes Fremont's varied experiences as an entrepreneur, abolitionist, Civil War general, two-time Republican presidential candidate, husband to the extraordinary Jessie Benton Fremont, and Gilded Age aristocrat. Chaffin brings to life the personal and political experiences of a remarkable American whose saga offers compelling insight into the conflicts, tensions, and contradictions at the core of America's lust for empire and its conquest of the Trans-Missouri West. Discovery & Exploration, Western Americana, American Biography, American West, United States History, U. S. History, American History, Americana, U.S.-iana, Cartography, Cartographer. bslic.

Soft cover. Zustand: As New. No Jacket. We list the ISBN of "Guarding the Golden Door," a "First paperback edition, 2005." Number line complete 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 -- the first printing thus. The author -- since retired from the University of Cincinnati and identified as a "consultant to PBS" -- is an historian, offering little in the way of economic analysis of the issue at hand, and seems to be opposed to most efforts to limit immigration or to encourage illegal aliens to depart, referring to such approaches (including California's Proposition 187) as "unconstitutional," "nativism" and "vigilantism" and to media publicity concerning documented crimes committed by illegals as "anti-immigration propaganda." He calls any suggestion of "controlling our borders . . . irresponsible." In fact, the term "illegal alien" is absent from the index here, and Eisenhower's hugely effective "Operation Wetback" is skipped over in the author's chronology, receiving no mention that we can find. Needless to say, the Los Angeles Times Book Review praised this book as "balanced in its assessments"! 328 pp. Reduced from $22. OUR SECOND OFFERING, "With These Hands" is a 1998 first edition hardcover in jacket from Harcourt Brace, letter line complete E D C B A, ISBN 0151002053. Author Rothenberg taught in the Law and Society Program at the University of California, Irvine and was previously a paralegal providing "federally funded legal services" for farm workers. Based on more than 250 interviews. 334 pp. including index. Braceros immigrant agricultural labor, reduced from $20. The pair of books on related topics -- one hardcover in jacket, one a trade paperback -- combined into a lot to consolidate shipping charge, the pair now marked down from $20.
