Friedrich "Fritz" Thyssen (1873-1951) was a leading German industrialist, and a German nationalist. For over fifteen years he backed Hitler and financed his movement, helping the Naz…is into power. He accepted the anti-Jewish legislation in pre-war Nazi Germany that excluded Jews from business, and dismissed his Jewish employees. But as a Catholic, he objected to the increasing Nazi persecution of the Catholic Church in Germany, and in 1937 he sent a letter to Hitler, protesting the persecution of Christians in Germany. He resigned from the Prussian Council of State, and by 1939 he was also criticising Nazi economic policies. He was expelled from the Nazi Party and the Reichstag, and his company was nationalised. In 1940, Thyssen moved to France, but was caught up in the German invasion of France and the Low Countries. He was arrested by Vichy France and sent back to Germany, where he was confined, first in a sanatorium near Berlin, then in Sachsenhausen and Dachau before being transferred to Tyrol in late-April 1945. He was liberated on 5 May 1945. This book is based on the memoirs of Thyssen, dictated to Emery Reves (1904-1981), a writer, publisher, and literary agent. The book is bound in the original grey-blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards and the spine is slightly cocked and faded. The corners are lightly bumped and there is slightly heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with and inscription dated 1941 on the front free endpaper.
