Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. Fine unread condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes List of Other Books by C.S. Lewis; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes by Luther and Thomas More; Preface; and a rear section of C.S. Lewis classics advertisements. A C.S. Lewis Signature Classic "A masterpiece of satire on hell's latest novelties and Heaven's unanswerable answer. This classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written." - from the rear outer cover.

Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, drawings, graphs, and diagrams. "Breakthrough Evidence on the Ultimate Mystery of the Universe." - from the rear outer cover. "Meyer's book is a masterclass. It does irreparable damage to atheist rhetoric and shows the God hypothesis offers the best explanation of our finely tuned, information-rich universe." - John C. Walton, Ph.D., DSC, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and research professor of chemistry at the University of St. Andrews. "A comprehensive and lucid argument for theism as the best explanation for the scientific evidence. Stephen Meyer has a true gift for conveying complex concepts clearly." - Dr. Robert Kaita, former principal research physicist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. "An irrefutable case for God. The logic throughout is compelling and the book almost impossible to put down.a masterpiece." - Dr. Michael Denton, former senior research fellow in biochemistry at the University of Otago and author. "More than 400 pages of straighforward, engrossing prose, close reasoning, intellectual history, and cosmology, all in the interest of asking the most important questions about existence itself. An astonishing achievement." - Peter Robinson, Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institutions at Stanford University and former White House speechwriter. "When you don't understand the details of living systems, ignorance permits discounting a Creator. But when the details of science are thrust upon you, you're forced to ask: How on Earth - literally - did that happen? Thus, the God hypothesis returns. Stephen Meyer convincingly drives the point home: How could it be this way? Only God!" - James M. Tour, PhD, T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Chemistry and professor of nano-engineering at Rice University. "Stephen Meyer is a genuine renaissance person. His work tears down many purported barriers between science, philosophy, and religion. An important book of both breadth and depth." - Dr. Henry F. Schaefer III, Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry and director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at University of Georgia. "Beginning in the late nineteenth century, many intellectuals began to insist that scientific knowledge conflicts with traditional theistic belief - that science and belief in God are "at war." Philosopher of science and director of the Center for Science and Culture at Discovery Institute Stephen C. Meyer challenges this view by examining three scientific discoveries with decidedly theistic implications. Building on the case for the intelligent design of life that he developed in Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in cosmology and physics coupled with those in biology help to establish the identity of the designing intelligence behind life and the universe. Meyer argues that theism - with its affirmation of a transcendent, intelligent, and active creator - best explains the evidence we have concerning biological and cosmological origins. Previously Meyer refrained from attempting to answer questions about "who" might have designed life. Now he provides an evidence-based answer revealing a stunning conclusion: the data support not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind - but the existence of a personal God." - from the inner front jacket flap.

Summer 1914. A world on the brink of catastrophe. In London, twenty-six-year-old Venetia Stanley - aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless - is part of a fast group of upper-crust bohemians and socialites known as "The Coterie." She's also engaged in a clandestine love affair with the prime minister, H.H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state. As Asquith reluctantly leads the country into war with Germany, a young intelligence officer with Scotland Yard is assigned to investigate a leak of top-secret documents. Suddenly, what was a sexual intrigue becomes a matter of national security that could topple the British government - and alter the course of political history. Precipice is another electrifying thriller from the brilliant imagination of Robert Harris, an unrivaled master of seamlessly weaving fact and fiction." - from the inner front jacket flap.

Octavo, leather-backed marbled boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 132 pp. Very Good, with lightly rubbed edges and embossed stamp to Content page. From Introduction: In the fall of 1742 there occurred in the back country of Virginia one of those unpremeditated, meaningless clashes between an Iroquois hunting party and some white settlers that so often threatened or broke the peace of the North American colonies. Who fired the first shot was not at first clear, but because an Indian war in Virginia would inevitably draw in Pennsylvania, the governor of this province in January 1743 sent Conrad Weiser, the Province interpreter, to Shamokin to assure the Iroquois representative there of the continuance of Brother Onas' friendship and to appeal to the Six Nations not to take the warpath. Reared among the Iroquois of New York, a Mohawk by adoption, Weiser spoke the Indians' language, understood and observed their customs, and enjoyed their confidence. For ten years as Pennsylvania's "ambassador to the Indians" -- his own accurately descriptive term -- Weiser had served them and his own people with rare intelligence, selflessness, and integrity. In his urgent mission to the Iroquois in the winter of 1743 Weiser succeeded in allaying the Indians' anger and resentment. The next summer, on behalf of the governor of Virginia, who offered the Iroquois a present to remove the hatchet from their heads, he travelled to the Council seat of the Six Nations at Onondaga. On this journey he was accompanied by two acquaintances, John Bartram and Lewis Evans. United States History, U. S.
