Hills' collection of essays, prepared in remembrance of his eleven years as minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon. Topics include his experiences in Oregon, the history of the Presbyterian Church in Oregon and California, a couple homilies, and a measured assessment of Christian Science. Edgar Preston Hill (1861-1938) was a prominent Presbyterian minister in Chicago and Portland and a national church administrator. He was a native of Pontiac, Illinois, and was educated in Chicago, graduating from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1888. He served as the minister of First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, Illinois, 1889-1895, and First Presbyterian Church of Portland, Oregon, 1895-1906, before returning to Chicago to serve as the chair of homiletics at McCormick Seminary. In 1919, he became the General Secretary of the Board of Education of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Descriptions promote Oregon's scenery, exports, fisheries, forestry, irrigation, livestock, agriculture, and climate, among others. There is also a section that concisely summarizes the attributes and revenue of different Oregon counties such as Baker County, Benton County, Coos County, Douglas County, Gilliam County, Harny County, Josephine County, Klamath County, Lake County, Lincoln County, Marion County, Multnomah County,Tillamook County, Umatilla County, Wallowa County, Wheeler County, and Yamhill County. Although a small rose show parade had been held in 1904, 1907 was the first official parade, and even included an electric parade, along with nightly fireworks.

This was published as a fund raiser for the Firemen's Relief Fund the same year as the Lewis & Clark Exposition, and is filled with excellent detailed illustrated advertisements for businesses and institutions in and around Portland, as well as 100s of photos of the Portland Fire Commissioners, Engineers, Battalion Chiefs, Engine Companies and Truck Companies in Districts 1, 2 and No. 3 on the East Side of the Willamette River. In addition, there are photos of the Fire Engines, Fire Boat, the christening of the Fire Boat, and even the Lewis & Clark Exposition Fire House, the fire alarm switch board, as well as many images of horse-drawn fire engines and hook & ladder engines. There are views and photos included of the Portland Lumber Company, Washington Street in Downtown Portland East of Third Street with trolleys and early automobiles driving down the road, the historic Dekum Office Building, the Steel Bridge Saloon owned by Louis Heinrich, the Imperial Hotel, Erickson's Cafe and Concert Hall, St. Vincent's Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, advertising displays for the Portland Millinery Store, and even the Meier & Frank Department Store. Of particular interest is the half-page biography and history for Dr. Wing Lee, educated in China, and recognized at the time as the leading Chinese physician on the West Coast.
