A substantial and historically important collection of the medical writings of the Scottish physician and scholar Archibald Pitcairne, one of the leading proponents of iatrophysical medicine in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Educated at Edinburgh and Leiden, Pitcairne sought to explain bodily functions through mechanical and mathematical principles, heavily influenced by Newtonian science and the circulation theories of Harvey. This 1715 English translation gathers together his influential medical dissertations, lectures, case studies, and theoretical writings, including discussions on the circulation of the blood, fevers, respiration, anatomy, and the philosophical foundations of medicine. Particularly notable is the appended treatise on the treatment of smallpox, a subject of immense importance in the pre-vaccination era. The volume offers a vivid snapshot of Enlightenment medical thought at a moment when physicians increasingly attempted to reconcile empirical observation with mechanical philosophy. Pitcairne's work was deeply influential upon later physicians in both Britain and continental Europe, especially within Edinburgh's medical tradition. This copy retains attractive contemporary blind-paneled calf boards and bears several early ownership inscriptions. Condition & Binding: Contemporary full calf with elaborate blind-paneled decoration to covers and raised bands to spine. Front board detached; rear board holding but worn. Binding heavily rubbed and scuffed with notable edgewear, surface abrasion, and wear at corners and joints. Spine worn with some loss and cracking. Internally, the text is complete but heavily affected by old dampstaining throughout, especially to preliminary and terminal leaves, with staining extending through much of the text block. Scattered foxing, toning, and handling wear throughout. Several early manuscript ownership inscriptions appear to title page and endleaves. Overall- poor to fair.
