First edition of "one of Heywood's most interesting pot-boilers" (Pforzheimer). Octavo, bound in three quarter polished calf over marbled boards, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, wood-engraved frontispiece portrait of Merlin "generally attributed to [Wenzel] Hollar" (Wither to Prior 448), woodcut initials, headpieces and tailpieces. In very good condition, lacking as usual To the Reader leaf, frontispiece trimmed, small repair to the title page. Uncommon. Based on older English chroniclers including Speed and Holinshed and offering an exhaustive history of all of the kings of England dating back to the legendary king Brutus, Heywood's Life of Merlin was "much less concerned with the biography than with the political forecasts of the sage. With the benefit of hindsight, Heywood provided an account that he claimed was Merlin's own prophecy, and which accurately foretold the course of English history up to the coronation of King Charles I. At that point, Heywood wisely paused" (Simpson, "Merlin and Hull," Quondam et Futurus 3:1 (1993), 60). Also informed by Geoffrey of Monmouth's Prophetiae Merlini (1134), the book was designed primarily "to attract that growing public which, worried and confused by the shadow of the coming troubles, might hope for guidance in this farrago of prognostications in much the same way that the public seizes upon each new economic forecast of today⦠It appears to have been the forerunner of a flood of 'Prophesies'" (Pforzheimer 478).…

Date: The music, but for one piece (1852), is undated; but I presume it is generally from this period. Of those that I find for sale or in archives The Postman's Knock is dated1855 and Bonnie Dundee 1856. The imagery however, and quality of the paper of others, gives me the impression that they are older. Condition: Very Good. The boards are quite worn. The top of the spine to a length of 5 cms is missing and this weakens the binding such that both boards are weak and one is only attached by a historic repair to the endpaper. The contents hold together well however. The pages have browned and foxed with some transference of the darker image from one page to another.They are occasionally damage to some degree, with small tears at the edges, bits of loss, historic repairs (see photograph), and one long tear that cuts horizontally across the page; but nothing is lost of importance. Vellum Binding. Zustand: Very Good+ binding. Small quarto. 260, [1], [3 (blank)] pp. Limited edition, one of 300 copies on paper. As issued, in limp vellum by Doves Bindery, stamp-signed on the rear turn-in; housed in modern slipcase. Quite a nice copy with little mellowing to the vellum; contents have very occasional and light toning, but generally, quite clean. Undoubtedly, Cobden-Sanderson and Walker's Doves Press stands as one of the titans of the private press movement reenergized by William Morris and his Kelmscott Press. Unlike Morris and Hornby's Ashendene Press, the Doves Press embraced restraint at least in designCobden Sanderson was anything but restrained in temperament. Colin Franklin writes, "It is kind of a paradox that the Doves Press, simplest and purest of them all in style, was the creation of more passion and complexity of thought than the rest of them put together" (p. 105). Unfortunately, the genius and artistic sensibility that brought out some of the greatest monuments of 20th century printing was ill fated and the partnership between T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker was ended in 1909. Cobden Sanderson would go on to print books for a few more years.
