A Complete Body of Ancient Geography by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, published in London in 1819 by James Whittle and Richard Holmes Laurie, represents one of the grand folio atlases of the nineteenth century. Measuring 21.5 by 15 inches, the book includes thirteen engraved double-page maps covering Rome, Gaul, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor and Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Roman Britain, and the western provinces of France, Spain, and Germany. D'Anville, noted for his methodical approach to ancient sources, shaped the way classical geography was studied in his time, and this atlas captures the scale of his vision. The binding has been restored, retaining original marbled boards with rubbing to corners and edges. Internally the maps are clean and sharply printed. Condition: Very Good. No publisher or date, but latter 19th century. Cabinet size cards, edges gilt, with a "contents" card, in a faux leather folder, gilt lettered. This set has only 19 of the cards, and some listed in the contents are not present, replaced by others. The nineteen are Tennyson, Thomas Moore, Bayard Taylor, William Cullen Bryant, N.P. Willis (with a greenish tint), John Godfrey Saxe, William Shakespeare (some soiling), Charles Dickens, James Russell Lowell, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Oliver Goldsmith (greenish tint), Lord Byron, Thomas Hood, Edgar Allan Poe, Fitz Greene Halleck, Queen Victoria (greenish tint), John Greenleaf Whittier. The cards are mostly in Fine condition, the leather folder badly worn and in two pieces, in Poor condition.

NSTC lists a similar item London to Birmingham, 1846: Bod only. A facsimile was published by Hampshire C.C. Museum Service in 2001.

Engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on wove paper, 11 1/2 x 17 1/4 inches (290 x 437 mm). Condition issues include significant creasing, toning, surface soiling and multiple paper tape repairs on the verso. Hand coloring is extensive and well saturated.

Copper engraving, in original wash colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into the original green marbled slipcase with paper label, the map, widest: 491 x 615 mm. Apparently unrecorded state of this important map, here in beautiful fresh condition and in the finest contemporary hand-colouring. In 1749, Robert Baker published a four-sheet map of Antigua from his recent survey; in 1775, Thomas Jefferys prepared a single-sheet version for inclusion in his West India Atlas. Baker's map, the first survey of the whole island, in both wall-map and atlas format, is the most important map of the island before the new surveys of the early 1850s. The single-sheet version, a more manageable size, proved particularly popular and remained in circulation up until 1860. This example was sold as a folding map, described as improved to 1819; this state not recorded in Tooley Printed Maps of Antigua.
