Russell paintings on front and rear covers, other Russell drawings inside. Stories & articles originally written for the Montana Automobile Assn. The map has been removed from inside back cover, but is laid in. Someone lightly sketched some mountains in a small area on the back of the map, otherwise crisp and clean, looks as if it has not even been opened. (A copy of an amazingly detailed map produced by the state in 1937!).

Full brown leather with gilt-stamped black leather spine label, gilt-tooled on board edges. Owner's name inked on blank preliminary, pages foxed with hints of dampstaining in margins, hinges cracked, leather is dry and worn and chipped, a good only copy lacking the rear fly and the fold-out map. Barber, a notable engraver, unwittingly became the state's historian while traveling through Connecticut. He spoke to the local townspeople, collected documents, made sketches of important locations and buildings. This book has been called "the first popular local history published in the U.S.".

Map toned and split along folds, else intact and sound. Ownership inscriptions of Joseph H. Clayton to endpapers, along with his inscription presenting the volume to the Library of Harmony Lodge. Clayton also listed in the subscriber list at rear with residence listed as New Haven. Very Good copy of a scarce local history, uncommon with the hand-colored map.
