Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 3rd Edition. The Art of Swimming. With Advice for Bathing. by Moniseur Melchisedech Thevenot, John Lever, Third Edition, London,1789. DESCRIPTION: FULL TITLE: The art of swimming. Illustrated by forty proper copper-plate cuts, Which represent the different Postures necessary to be used in that Art. With advice for bathing. By Monsieur Thevenot. Done out of French. To which is prefixed a prefatory discourse concerning artificial swimming, or keeping one's self above Water by several small Portable Engines, in Cases of Danger. Duodecimo, Pagination [22],60, 40 plates including a frontispiece, variously numbered but not necessarrily in sequence after the French originals of Charles Moette. Bound without the final advert leaf in contemporary calf with later black label. CONDITION: Binding is rubbed and cracked at joints with wear to spine ends. Lacking both free endpapers. Light soiling to text and staining to first preliminary pages else a sound tight copy of a fragile item. FURTHER COMMENTS: Third Edition of Thevenot's little book on swimming was a groundbreaking advance on anything written before having first been published in Paris in French in 1696, with a first English printing shortly after in 1699. The first French and English editions had 35 plates, enlarged in the third edition to forty plates as stated on the title page. All editions are rare, especially when complete with all plates.
