Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Here is "Annals of American bookselling 1638 - 1850", by Henry Walcott Boynton . It was published in 1932 by John Wiley & Sons; this is the First Edition, with the Errata slip attached at the Table of Contents (p. vii) . The following is excerpted from the author's Preface: "This book essays to bring together the salient facts and persons connected with bookmaking and book selling in the British American colonies and the young republic begotten of them. . It is an informal chronicle, not a treatise. Its theme is the colonial and early nineteenth century bookseller, not only as a maker and dealer in his special commodity, but as a citizen often worth knowing in his own right. The story has engaged the chronicler largely because so many of the personæ of this old book trade were picturesque or influential figures in their time." CHAPTERS : Background Beginnings The Cambridge Press Bookselling in Boston, 1657 - 1711 Philadelphia and New York, 1689 - 1723 The Franklins Small Town Pioneers Booksellers of the Revolution : New York Booksellers of the Revolution : Philadelphia and Boston The Post-Revolutionary Period The Turn of the Century New York Arrives Wileys and Putnams Appletons and Harpers The Boston Renaissance Source Books (Bibliography) Index ILLUSTRATIONS : The 'Bay Psalm Book', 1640 (Frontispiece) Hubbard's 'Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New England', 1677 Clough's Almanac : 'Kalendarium Nov-Anglicanum', 1705 Franklin Imprint : 'Three Letters from the Reverend G. Whitefield', 1740 The 'Massachusetts Spy', 1774 Wall Street about 1820 Cooper's 'The Spy', 1821 The Old Corner Book Store, Boston, about 1840 TITLE : Annals of American Bookselling, 1638 - 1850 AUTHOR : Henry Walcott Boynton (1869 - 1947) IMPRINT : John Wiley and Sons PLACE : New York DATE : 1932 EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Contains a Preface, a brief Bibliography, and an Index. There are a frontispiece and seven illustrations through the text (Printed on calendered paper); [x] + 209 pages; Errata slip is affixed to p. vii; approx. 5 1/2" x 8"; quarter bound with brown, paper-covered boards (styled to look like leather) and lightly sized, undyed buckram cloth over the spine; the spine has a leather title label, lettered in gilt. The fore-edge and bottom edge of the text-block are untrimmed. There is no dust-jacket. However, I have been unable to determine if there ever was a dust-jacket issued with the book. I presume likely not, but that is merely my assumption. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean, solid and presentable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : The spine cloth is darkened; the title label is somewhat rubbed, but the gilt lettering is still fairly bright; the bottom edges of the paper over the boards is shelf-rubbed; the fore-edge corner tips are softly bumped, with tiny surface loss (there is evidence of minor mending to one of the top corner tips); the front board has a few thin, scattered scuffs; there is a tiny spot (the same color as the paper) on the cloth that extends onto the front board. The top text-block edge is toned. BINDING : It is obvious that the book has been read - the leaves open easily and widely, but no leaves are detached or loose, and, while there are a couple of mildly cracked hinges the whole is decently sound. INTERIOR : The front paste-down has a small, circled number ; the rear pastedown paper is slightly split at the bottom over the hinge. One can see that this has been neatly mended. On the two opposing pages (178/179) is a discoloration (or darkening) of the paper derived from a small piece of paper laid in, I presume, as a bookmark (see image provided). Else the interior is clean and attractive.
