A monument to him stands in Porto's Protestant cemetary. He presents this volume to one John Lodge DD, whose bookplate it bears. A rare work. COPAC locates only one copy - at the National Trust library, with its second volume.

El mismo autor nos traslada ?la admiración de Juan Pablo Mártir por el cronista oficial de Enrique IV, el antiguo liguista Pierre Mathieu (1563-1521).? y nos dice asimismo que ?De Pedro Mateo ?el nombre castellanizado de Matthieu?, Mártir traduce tres obras, publicadas en el año 1625: Vida del dichoso desdichado, Historia de la prosperidad infeliz de Felipa de Catanea, la lavandera de Nápoles e Historia de la muerte de Enrico el Grande, cuarto rey de Francia, obra dedicada, como hace decir Mateo a Felipe II, al ?mayor capitán del mundo? Quevedo, el más célebre de los amigos de Mártir, fue asimismo traductor de Matthieu y sostuvo que el francés, aun no siendo justo con los reyes de Aragón y mostrando su enemistad con España, escribió una obra digna de alabanza que contenía enseñanzas políticas muy aprovechables. This edition is published by the same Confraternity of St. John the Evangelist who also published an edition of his works in the same year. ?The treatise attempts to establish the theoretical groundwork for a governmental system based on Christian ideals. The best form of government, according to Quevedo, is a monarchy, one whose authority is absolute because it issues from divine will. The king should govern using Christ as his supreme model. Much attention is paid to the qualities required of the king?s counselors, they being probably as important as the king himself. Quevedo rejects tyrannicide as the solution for an evil monarch, choosing instead to present the latter as a form of divine punishment which must be suffered in silence. The work contains few truly original ideas, its significance stemming principally from the mastery of its style as well as the great popularity it achieved? Bound in handsome early 20th century half red morocco with gilt trim over red cloth boards; all edges gilt. An excellent, crisp copy. Fifth recorded copy of this ephemeral newsletter reporting on the devastating tsunami/earthqua…ke which destroyed Lima and Callao on October 28, 1746. A version of the text was first printed in Lima that same year surviving in four copies worldwide and a further edition appeared in Mexico in 1747. The present work seems to be the first European printing of the newsletter (no version was printed in Madrid), although a book-length account was also translated into English in 1748. "The original edition is a piece of extreme rarity. It relates one of the most dreadful convulsions of nature on record. The Port of Callao was inundated by the sea, and the entire population perished; Lima was almost destroyed." (Sabin). It is interesting to consider the effect of reports of Peruvian devastation on the inhabitants of Lisbon, which would itself be struck just 7 years later by a magnitude 8 earthquake. Striking in the middle of the night, the Lima earthquake is today estimated to have had a magnitude of almost 9 on the Richter scale. The present text seems to be the source for many of the statistics subsequently passed on through European chronicles: for example, although the population of Lima is said to be 60,000, just 1,141 are reported dead; of 3,000 buildings in the city, just 25 are still standing. Specific structures and churches felled by the earthquake are recorded in detail. Callao, the northernly port of Lima, did not escape so lightly. We find the names of merchants (Thomas de Chavaque, Juan Lucas Camacho, Marcos Sanz, etc.) whose ships were destroyed in the port; about half an hour after the tremors, a tsunami killed some 5,000 inhabitants and flattened all remaining structures. Recent scholarship suggests that the author of the pamphlet remains anonymous, although in the past wrongly attributed to the Argentinian Jesuit historiographer Pedro Lozano (1697-1752). OCLC shows just four copies of the present translation worldwide: JCB, NYPL, Newberry, and the BN de Chile. Discusses measures for preventing the plague, diagnosing it, curing it, and keeping it from spreading to other countries. The anonymous author devotes chapters to sealing the borders and ports against plague, keeping the streets and public markets clean, dealing with the poor, preservation of the water and food suplies from contamination, appropriate dress for patients, doctors and nurses. He recommends the creation of a Health Comission and of special hospitals and burial grounds. At the end is a recipe for a perfume to disinfect the homes of those who died of the plague among the ingredients are sulfur, antimony, arsenic, assafetida, pepper, ginger and farellos (defined in our dictionary as chaff, bran, sawdust or dandruff). The introduction shows a combination of religious and medical concerns typical of mid eighteenth century Portugal. One of the licenses mentions that the author was Pedro Villela, and from the others it is clear that he was a physician.

Este documento esteve ainda na base da regulamentação da Marinha Imperial Brasileira, "Regulamento do Arsenal das Barcas". Raro.
