Some foxing, mainly on first and last few pages. Occasional stains within. Hugh C. Thomson was a member of the House of Assembly for the County of Frontenac. He and James Macfarlane were both associated with Kingston newspapers, Thomson with the Upper Canada Herald, which he founded, and Macfarlane with the Kingston Chronicle. In the Advertisement at the front of this volume, they refer to the "universally acknowledged necessity" of a revised edition of the Statutes of Upper Canada as their reason for taking upon themselves the "risk and responsibility" of publishing. The Advertisement also refers to "the Gentleman" who prepared the index and notes of reference; presumably this was the lawyer, James Nickalls. There is no rearrangement or consolidation of the original statutes in this edition. If amendments are made, the reader is referred from the original act to the amended one.…

Notes: First quarto edition, rare. The first edition of Farneworth s translation containing the four major works and the minor works, adding posthumous works including a discourse on the reformation of Florentine government and a number of letters concerning matters of state, as well as the Life of Machiavelli. The folding plans are typographic plans for The Art of War detailing formations of troops. There are voluminous notes throughout and The Prince is followed by Frederick the Great s Examen or Anti-Machiavel , with Voltaire s preface. Needless to say this edition is less sympathetic to Machiavelli than Neville s and is even hostile to the jejune and agenda-serving translations of the previous century. This edition reprints Machiavelli s apology alongside a letter sent in 1762 by William Warburton, throwing doubt on Neville s authorship and suggesting that the Marquis of Wharton, the redoubtable Whig, was the author. This is the only recorded copy of Part Two. The Euphrosyne is quite an enigma. There are two editions of the work, both printed by James Joey, Jr., in Dublin. Oxford libraries seem to be the only holders of these two books. Even though they hold a complete copy of the first edition (in two parts), they have only the first part of the second edition, which ends on p. 132. However, the second edition also has a second part and follows the same pattern as in the first edition. In both editions, the pagination is continuous. They also pretty much follow each other verbatim (there are some minor differences). Following the text of both editions in ECCO, I had this copy of the book completed in good facsimile, which lacks three leaves at the end of part II before the Index, by following the text in the existing Oxford copies. Page 258 of Part II of the first edition is titled 'The Company Keeper's Assistant. A Collection of Toasts, Sentiments, and Hob-Nobs (it is followed by four classes of Hob-Nobs). Page 1 of Part I of the second edition repeats the same heading and is followed by the first two classes of Hob-Nobs. At the bottom of page 8, a note reads: Having added largely in this second edition to the collection of sentiments, there is not room for the third and fourth class in this part, which were taken into the first edition; we must therefore refer the reader to the second part of this volume for the Third Class, or, 'Two faces under a Hood;' and also for the fourth class, being the Hob-Nobs. The two classes of sentiments necessarily omitted in this first part, are considerably augmented in the second part. There is no real indication that the second edition was greatly augmented. I used the third and fourth class entries from the first edition, but had to delete an extraneous passage, so that there is a lacuna in one page. The page numbers in the facsimile pages were changed to match the text of the second edition. …

He regrets to inform him that there is 'no present vacancy in Northern Nigeria', but that he has 'written to the c.o. on behalf of Mr Trayler whom you recommend, & I hope he may obtain an appointment in another Colony if no vacancy occurs in N. Nigeria'. He remembers 'very well indeed' their conversation 'regarding Mount Edwin Arnold, [between Victoria and Albert Nyanza, and subsequently named Lobaba] & also several other occasions after which I had the honour & pleasure of meeting you some years ago'.…

Title page dusted, spotted, with several chips not affecting text, and an institutional rubberstamp. 52pp, small hole at second leaf does not injure text. Some significant spotting of about half the leaves. Good. The earlier of only two publications by this Society, an adjunct of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The Society began in 1767 as a response to the hardships visited upon families of "missionaries in the service of the society for the propagation of the gospel in foreign parts" who "have too frequently been obliged to leave their families." Its history, laws, summaries of meetings, and benefactors are printed here. William Smith, Thomas Bradbury Chandler, and Jonathan Odell were its leaders. Evans 12761. Hildeburn 2841.
