Kat Ran Press was founded in 1994 by Katherine and Michael Russem with the goal of combining classical typography and contemporary art with the old ideals of fine printing. The Press had a pretty good run over the ne…xt eighteen years, printing everything from modest pamphlets to portfolios which have fetched as much as $1 million at auction. With the closing of the letterpress plant in Florence earlier in 2012, the staff of the Cambridge Offices decided to put together a 60-page illustrated checklist of the over eighty limited editions designed, printed, and/or published at Kat Ran. Included is everything from the student books of the Russems to the last books they printed for The Lone Oak Press and Sherwin Beach Press. All books are described with just the right amount of detail for the casual reader, and most descriptions are followed by additional commentary by the printer. This major checklist of the works by a minor press is a must-have for any collector, printer, student, or library concerned with fine printing between 1994 and the middle of 2012. Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. FROM THE PRESS After several years of planning, we finally had the pleasure of offering this title in November of 2001. Four short and sweet pieces by Robin Barber, writer/teacher/landlord, were composed in Bembo types and printed on dampened paper by Michael and Katherine Russem and Ms Corinne Gill on… our presses overlooking the warehouse of Deals & Steals, a local purveyor of packaged health foods that have long since passed their date of expiration. Four complementary drawings were made by Jennifer Jo Schmidtmann, artist/printer/dental assistant/native of Liverpool. These drawings were reincarnated as photogravure plates under the watchful eye of Jon Goodman and printed on his press by Rosemary Kress. The papers used throughout are Twinrocker, Griffen, and Oakdale, the latter laboriously dyed and re-dyed at the Press until they turned a deep, dark blue hue, and then used for the covers of the books. All bindings and boxes (which measure a comfortable 7½ x 11 inches) were made by Sarah Grace Provoncha at her well-equipped New Haven bindery. Fifty numbered copies were offered for $800, while an additional fifteen copies were lettered and divided among those individuals who participated in the making of the book and are not available at any price. Four prose poems, each accompanied by one black and white illustration. stiff paper wrappers, clam shell box with cover and spine labels. Fine/near fine.
