(Hardcover, 2008). 2008 1st edition. Large quarto (223 x 283mm). Ppxxii,326. Many colour plates of flies, colour and b/w plates and photographs, bibliography. Dark blue cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slight use but very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. "Charts the history and development of flyfishing in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. [The author's] detailed research brings together the lives and backgrounds of many noted Derbyshire and Staffordshire fly-fishers for the first time in this comprehensive, but highly readable work; he discusses the evolution and features of local patterns, winging patterns and the notes and fly-dressings of noted angler-authors from the 18th and 19th centuries [as well as] anglers of influence up to the present day". Very well-illustrated with plates of flies from Aldam, Foster, Roger Woolley and other early writers and fly-tyers and with many two-page spreads of the flies of more recent Derbyshire flyfishers. Excellent historical sections on "Angler-authors of Derbyshire and Staffordshire" (Charles Cotton, W.H. Aldam, Alfred Ronalds, John Turton, William Shipley and David Foster), with lists of their fly-patterns, and "Anglers of influence"; Izaak Walton, T.C. Hofland, John Beever, James Ogden, the Marquess of Granby, William H. Foster, Edward Marston, Walter M. Gallichan, Gerald G.P. Heywood, Wilfred Louis Foster, A. Nelson Bromley, Roger Woolley, and present-day authorities; John Neville, Tony Bridgett, Steve Trigg, Steve Woolley, Tim Thorpe and Peter Arfield. Frontispiece and jacket paintings by Ashley Bryant. Many of the traditional flies were tied by Tim Thorpe and photographed by Terry Griffiths. A first-class and authoritative production of great value to the angling historian and also to the Derbyshire and Staffordshire fly-fisher and fly-tyer of today. .

Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 2008). 2008 1st edition. 4to (180 x 260mm). Ppxxxiv,168. Illustrated with a colour photograph of The Judge salmon fly by Terry Griffiths, colour plate of the Bann Falls, b/w ills from photographs & old engravings, facsimiles of diary pages, fold-out map, silk marker. Buff buckram, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. A social history of Irish angling. The diaries of John Macky, Inspector of Rivers to Lady Hamilton, owner of much of the River Bann. Macky occupied the post from 1787 onwards. In 1798 the estate changed hands and a new, and thoroughly crooked, bailiff was appointed over Macky's head. Macky's "fears for his own position kept him from speaking out to anyone but his diary, telling of the actions of an unscrupulous employee and his family." Includes much on the daily life of the area around the Bann and its inhabitants in the years 1791 to 1809, and a detailed historical sketch of the Irish Society which now owns the fisheries of the lower Bann. .

Buch Erstausgabe
(Hardcover, 2009). (1807) 2009 1st edition thus. A miniature book. 60 x 65mm (2.4 x 2.6"). Pp61 + errata. Two actual flies laid in. Colour fold-out of flies. Marbled boards. Fine copy in cloth slipcase. This issue limited to 125 copies. Swarbrick was a farmer from Austby, near Ilkley on the River Wharfe. His list is "the earliest one known which gives detailed dressings for the flies and the times of the year for which they are most suitable." (Magee). Although written in 1807, it did not appear in print until 1907, when Ellis Beanlands published it together with J.W. Sagar's list of 1890. This edition lists only Swarbrick's dressings, together with modern substitutes. It is illustrated with woodcuts by Joan Hassall and with fold-out colour plates of flies. Introduction by Leslie Magee. Pages not numbered (61 pp + 30 colour plates + 1 extra errata plate.) This is a miniature book which has been printed letterpress by Simon Lawrence at the Fleece Press, using 1950's hand-made paper. Ken and Joyce Smith have bound the book in "hand-marbled paper, made by Compton Marbling in 1995," with a fly mounted inside each board, front and back. These flies are a Large March Brown (number 5) and a Small Black Flie (number 26), and have been tied by Stuart Bowdin of Pendle Flies. The book is issued in a cloth-covered slip-case. 125 copies have been issued under each imprint, with five more each for private distribution. This totals only 260 copies. We also have copies of the de luxe edition in stock. .

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine+. Illustrated by Joan Hassall (illustrator). Reprint Edition. John Swarbrick s List as a miniature book, typeset and printed letterpress on handmade paper. Almost one description per page. Each pattern has been tied by Stuart Bowdin, photographed and reproduced in full color on fold out pages, with a mounted fly tied by Stuart Bowdin set inside the front and back boards; at the front is Large March Brown (No 5) and at the back is Small Black Flie (No 26). 260 copies of this standard edition have been jointly produced with the Fleece Press, half the edition bearing each publisher s imprint, this copy with the Ken Smith Publishing imprint. Very Fine in marbled boards in cloth covered slipcase; John Swarbrick, a farmer who lived in the hamlet of Austby, near the river Wharfe, wrote his manuscript list in 1807, not just a list of fly dressings but also a diary of natural events in and around the upper Wharfe. It was believed to be the earliest known list of artificial flies for that river. The list remained relatively unknown until it was printed as a small booklet exactly 100 years later in 1907 and very few copies of this list have survived; Miniature; 66 pages.
