Buch
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint. As the events of 1939-1945 fade from living memory and the Second World War recedes into the history books, new generations of readers seek answers to old questions. How did there come to be such a war at all, so soon after the Great War? Were the participant nations seeking conflict, or did they have it thrust upon them? What actually happened in that war to cause the deaths of some fifty million men, women and children? In his new book John Ray first examines the social, political and military background of the inter-war years. He then traces the progress of the conflict across all campaigns and theatres of war. At each point he explains how the leaders took the course of action they did, for good or bad, and the consequent effects on the future conduct of the war. He makes very clear the distinction between planning for war, and the real thing; we see how often indecision, incidents and accidents unexpectedly come to win or lose a battle. This is history made real and exciting in a concise, fast-moving and always fascinating approach of particular value to newcomers to the subject. The Second World War shaped the second half of the twentieth century; our grasp of the world we now live in is incomplete without an understanding of how and why that war was conducted. This book explains the Second World War. Illustrated with B/W photographs. Crease on back cover.

In which will be found, amongst other pleasant and satirical novelties, an introduction; a description of the plates; illustrative anecdotes from my "Tour through Holland" in 1806; an appendix, containing three MSS. found in St. Patrick's Abbey; and An Essay in defence of bad spelling." (from the title page) This copy is the seocnd edition. When the travels of Sir John Carr were attracting attention, Dubois undertook, for the publishers of the 'Monthly Mirror,' to write a satirical pamphlet on Carr's writing. It was called My Pocket-book, or Hints for a "Ryghte merrie and conceitede tour, in quarto; to be called, 'The Stranger in Ireland,' in 1805. By a Knight Errant", 1807. This satire quickly passed through two editions, and was followed by 'Old Nick's Pocket-book,' 1808, written in ridicule of Dubois, by a friend of Carr, who was stung into bringing an action against Hood and Sharpe. The case came before Lord Ellenborough and a special jury, at Guildhall, 1 August 1808, when the judge summed up in favour of the defendants, and the verdict was given for them. Two reports of the trial were issued, one on behalf of the plaintiff and the other in the interest of the defendants; the latter report was appended to a third edition of My Pocket-book. (from Wikipedia) Previous owner, Alexander Speirs of Elderslie (died 1844) was a Scottish politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1841.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Both books are in Very Good condition. This is the so-called second issue, with the plate signed Aymer de Valance in the second volume signed A. Pugin. Of the five sets I have seen, all are second issue. Its very rarely seen original calf-skin covers have been recently polished to a shine. Both spines show wear (gouges, stress) with the abbreviated book title Hist. of Peter's Westminster and volume number with the starburst sign down the three-colored spine. Clean Morocco design on all end-papers as well as page edges. There has been some professional strengthening to the volumes which is undetectable. One of the great Ackermann color-plate books, complete with floor plan, portrait line engraving and 81 hand-colored aquatint plates. An attractive set with the plates in excellent, fresh condition. Artists include J. Bluck, J. Hamble, T. Sutherland, A. Pugin and H. Villiers. Volume I s frontispieces of William Vincent D.D. Dean of Westminster has about a ¼ page water stain. The interior of these volumes is outstanding for their lack of off-setting, foxing, tears, marks or wear and tear associated with books over two hundred years old. The first and last pages of both volumes are the exception showing browning, age spots and ghost images of both frontispieces and Vol Is floor plan of the church. Otherwise the pages are remarkably clean, white and clear. These are large and heavy books 13.5 by 11 . They are a remarkable history of not only the Church and its history, but also that of the Deans throughout time whose influence shaped this monument. It is enlarged and engaging as it lists and describes the many finer points and articles of interest and how it has affirmed its iconic standing within England s ecclesiastical history. Simply striking in its original, simply worded and beautifully illustrated condition, this copy is a rare find indeed. Price includes shipping via USPS, insured.
