Using a copula approach compared to normality assumptions for the BRIC stock markets, using data between January 2007 and December 2010. VaR and ES are estimated using standard normality assumptions and with the use of copulas in which first the markets¿ marginal distributions are estimated, after which the right copula for the indicated dependence between markets is determined based on maximum likelihood and Kendall¿s tau estimates. Employing Monte Carlo simulation, this research finds that daily VaR estimates can be as much as 1.73% higher for those based on copulas. This effect is mainly caused by the presence of tail dependence in the markets under research. Similarly, ES estimates differ up to 4.19%. A theoretical model is presented to link being a backpacker, need for information, and a) where information sources are found (internally vs. externally), b) how many information sources are used, and c) which types of information sources are used (direct vs. mediated). The model and hypotheses were tested through an online survey among travelers. Results showed that being a backpacker is minimally related to the type of information sources used, and not to where sources are found or how many sources are used. Instead, the use of travel information sources was related to demographic variables such as age, level of income, level of education, length of trip, and the regions visited. Individual characteristics thus seem of more importance in explaining information used during travel than traveler group characteristics. Using data from nearly 6000 bank/year combinations for 16 countries, individual bank efficiency scores are computed, which are then aggregated to obtain a national efficiency score for each country per year. These calculations are performed using a non-parametric input-orientated frontier analysis with constant returns to scale. Strong evidence is found that suggests financial deregulation programs have a positive influence on the efficiency of banks. Within these liberalization programs, banking regulations and policies on securities markets seem to have the strongest positive effect, while credit controls negatively influence bank efficiency.
