This illustrated narrative is reprinted from its original appearance in Picturesque America: or, The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil . edited by William Cullen Bryant (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1872), volume 1, pages 464-495. Smillie's account is based upon his trip to Yosemite Valley in the summer of 1871 where he visited Clouds Rest, Little Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point in addition to the principal attractions on the Valley floor.
