Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Foreword by the Dalai Lama. At the beginning of the 20th century, nearly 100,000 tigers roamed in the wild. Today only about 3,500 exist in the world. In India, over 40,000 tigers ruled the forests. Now an estimated 1,706 remain. But, India still holds over half the world s tiger population. At one time India was ahead of Africa, as far as the big six were concerned Lion, Cheetah Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Tiger. Africa does not have the tiger. The Cheetah has totally disappeared from India and the Lion is confined to the Gir Forest. Tigers are being killed for their skin and bones, Rhinos for their horns, Elephants for their tusks. In 2011 and 2012, 61 and 76 tigers died respectively. If current trends are any indicator, the tiger s existence is doubtful. In 2012, 288 Leopards were killed. 925 Rhinos died in Kaziranga national park in last 10 years. 296 Elephants died in Orissa in last 5 years. The situation is alarming and calls for urgent solutions. Awareness to save the Tiger and wildlife needs to be created on a large scale. This book is an attempt in that direction.
