With brief Acknowledgements essay, brief Preface, thirty b/w photographs, Bibliography, and Index. With details gleaned from folksy interviews and formal research, Clarke reviews the background and events regarding the notorious Dr. William Lipscomb serial murder case as well as the violent Gully versus Chisolm family blood feud which have long besmirched the history of Kemper County, Mississippi to the extent that these 19th century Reconstruction-era crimes still haunt the area in the 21st century with the county still morbidly referred to as "Bloody Kemper." The sheer malevolence of the Lipscomb homicides is staggering and may very well be the worst serial murder case in United States history for Clarke reveals that the Doctor may have killed as many as fifty of his patients in a conspiracy with one or more local merchants to collect life insurance settlements. The actual number of deaths is disputed for a majority of the victims were indigent African Americans albeit the evidence of the conspiracy is quite strong. A near fine copy in a very good+ dust jacket. Although a relatively recent book, Clarke's BLOODY KEMPER is now the most sought after local history title for east central Mississippi and copies are exceptionally hard-to-find - this bookseller's last inventory copy was in 2007.
